What Qualifications will I gain?


Successful apprentices will gain a BEng building services engineering degree and on completion of the apprenticeship scheme, will have fully satisfied the requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer by the Chartered institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

Job overview
Our Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport network's building infrastructure.

As a Building Services Engineering apprentice, you'll help us provide our customers with a bright, clean, functional and welcoming environment that is safe and accessible to all, whilst keeping in line with passenger growth demands delivered through our line upgrades, renewals, enhancements and improvement programmes.

You'll help us retain and develop the in-house knowledge of our Electrical & Mechanical (E&M) assets as we upgrade our legacy assets to become safer, more reliable, automated and energy efficient.


What will I be doing?
As an apprentice, your 5.5 year development programme will be made up of several 6 month placement rotations. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone's career is different, so every apprentice's journey is unique.

Here's an idea of what yours could look like:


Year 1
**Placement - London Underground Asset Performance & Capital Delivery

  • Renewals Programme** (Six months)
  • You will become familiar with the development of technical scopes, design preparation and installation/commissioning support for small scale local infrastructure performance renewals on London Underground stations & associated infrastructure. These smallscale projects could include platform relighting, asset resilience/strengthening and minor station refurbishments, substation ventilation strengthening and tunnel ventilation fan upgrade works.

Placement - Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Beckton depot(Six months) - You will support the development of technical scopes for the DLR infrastructure. You will have the opportunity to support in the supervision of external design and installation. You will also be involved in commissioning support for medium scale performance improvements on the DLR system.


Year 2

Placement - London Underground Asset Performance & Capital Delivery(APCD) - Enhancements Programme (Six months) You will focus on refining your understanding of the technical scopes development and preparation of designs for projects on London Underground medium scale stations infrastructure. This will include preparing designs and installing or commissioning support for medium scale infrastructure performance enhancements. You will gain experience improving e.g. new station ticket halls, upgraded retail provisions in stations, substation ventilation and mid tunnel ventilation fans.


Placement - Commercial development property development Programme(Six months) You will be further refining your understanding of the technical scopes development and preparation of designs for a varying range of commercial development projects, in particular provision of retail units across the TfL estate.


Year 3

Placement - Road/street lighting infrastructure(Six months) You will have an opportunity to work on design preparation and installation of TfL's street and road lighting infrastructure, focusing on performance improvements. You will be required to provide support for commissioning of these infrastructure improvements where necessary.


Placement - Piccadilly Line Upgrade programme (Six months) - You will assist in the preparation of technical work scopes or designs for major tube line capacity upgrade works. There will be particular emphasis on design assurance, albeit with some design development for early lifecycle stage project. You will be involved in installation and commission support for provision of new line service control centres, equipment rooms and power infrastructure. You will also be involved in station air velocity mitigations & cooling upgrade works.


There will be ten mandatory placements in total, with the first six placements being directed and the remaining four placements having a degree of flexibility allowing the apprentice to tailor this to the scheme.

Each placement has set learning objectives to support you in achieving the qualifications required for your apprenticeship.

At the end of the 3rd year, you will choose to specialise in either the Electrical or Mechanical sub-discipline, with university modules selected to match this decision.

The remainder of the scheme placements will support you in fine tuning the specialist knowledge of your chosen area. Your further placements could then involve working on aspects of projects such as London Underground Dep
