The Communications Directorate is responsible for managing and developing the Bank's external and internal communications.

We manage the relationships with key stakeholder groups including the Media and Parliament, as well as providing a Public Enquires function.

We work with a wide range of colleagues to develop and deliver the Bank's programme of outreach and education, which includes building strategic partnerships with other organisations and running the Bank's Museum.

We also develop and maintain our external website and social media presence and produce the Bank's flagship publications, including the Inflation Report and Financial Stability Report.

In addition we lead on the development of the Bank's strategic plan, helping to ensure it achieves its desired outcomes, monitoring and reporting on delivery of the plan to the Executive Director Committee, Court and the wider Bank.

The Communications Directorate is also responsible for meeting the Bank's statutory obligations regarding the Freedom of Information Act, coordinating and responding to requests.


Department Overview

Stakeholder & Media Engagement has four key areas of focus: Press, Public & Stakeholder Engagement, Information Access and Parliamentary Affairs.

The teams within the division all play a role in contributing to the Communications Directorate.

Engagement and Enquiries (EEG) forms part of the wider Public & Stakeholder Engagement, which includes a mix of teams whose job it is to build public understanding in the work of the Bank, through answering direct questions, organising Citizens' Panels and providing speakers for schools, to name a few.


Job description


The job holder will work as part of the Engagement and Enquiries Group which has responsibility for dealing with external enquiries relating to the Bank's policies and responsibilities.

The role includes speaking with members of the public on the telephone, responding to written enquiries, supervising the Bank's social media channels and providing support to the wider work of EEG and its members.


An understanding of the Bank's roles and responsibilities and an ability to work collaboratively will be key components of this role.


A key strategic priority for the Bank is to build public trust and understanding in its role and the wider economy it operates in.

The work will be high profile and the successful applicant will be encouraged to influence how the Bank is perceived externally.


  • There may also be the opportunity to assist the work of the wider Public and Stakeholder Engagement team in the form of working in the Outreach Team. This role includes, taking ownership of the administrative and logístical arrangements for a range of inperson events across the UK as well as some virtual events (using MS Teams and Teams Live). This is likely to include booking venues and catering, creating and sending invites, and arranging participants' attendance including senior policy makers at the Bank, the Bank's agents, independent Chairperson, Bank volunteers, and members of the public, updating the database, monitoring the inbox. They will also tailor existing briefings for Bank staff on the events, collate event feedback and monitor the budget and undertake all the finance related to events

Detailed Description

  • Share information and learn and develop communication skills
  • A good knowledge of, and a curiosity about the Bank's core purposes, operations and responsibilities
  • A strong attention to detail
  • Excellent organisational skills, ability to prioritise optimally and multitask to meet tight time limits.
  • To provide a significant personal contribution to the output of EEG

Minimum Criteria

  • Selfconfident and effective communication skills, both written and oral.
  • A great teammate, willing to help others to achieve results and tackle new challenges
  • Selfmotivation and an ability to work and research with minimum supervision
  • Excellent IT skills particularly Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • An understanding of social media and an ability to interact through the various channels in an appropriate and engaging way.
