The Allied Health Professions (AHP) Support Workforce plays an important role in delivering safe and effective care.

We need to ensure that our AHP support workforce have the right knowledge and skills, are supported by training & education and have access to opportunities for career progression.

The National AHP Support Workforce Programme aims to have consistent and sustainable education and career development pathways for AHP support workers implemented by provider organisations, in England, by April 2025.


The Midlands AHP Support Worker Implementation Lead is a crucial role, working both locally (within the ICS) and regionally with the AHP support workforce programme team to enable progress against these aims.


The opportunity has arisen, for a secondment or fixed term contract for 6 months, to work directly with the Midlands AHP Team in Workforce, Education & Training Directorate, NHSE, and with Nottingham & Nottinghamshire ICS to support delivery of national priorities related to the AHP support workforce.


We are looking for an experienced leader who is confident to work in senior leadership arenas to promote AHP support workers.

They must be able to engage constructively with external agencies, such as HEIs and other provider organisations in the ICS and regionally, to promote career opportunities, education & training for AHPs.

Main duties of the job


Acting as a single point of contact for the Midlands region, the post holder will work as part of a co-ordinated matrix team, supported by NHS E, working on regional and national activity, related to the National AHP Support Workforce Programme.

They will also support and enable ICS based activity, ensuring that ICB and regional activity remains consistent with national policy.

The post holder will work across the regional footprint 4 days a week and focus on ICB priorities 1 day a week.


Consulting widely with internal and external stakeholders, the post holder will develop a regional and a system level AHP support workforce plan to underpin the national and local AHP strategic plans.

Priorities will be set and milestones outlined, reporting updates monthly to NHSE and ICS AHP Leads.

It is expected that the post holder will deliver demonstrable improvement activity:

  • Implementation of the AHP Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework, across the Midlands.
  • Act on local support workforce findings of AHP workforce projects from 2021/2
  • Embed inclusive recruitment strategies for AHP support workers, in partnership with the regional AHP BAME Strategic Advisory group (or equivalent forums)
  • Increase the number of entry level and/or assistant practitioner roles across priority clinical pathways or employers
