North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint two Trust Doctors at Registrar level based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle with a commitment to work across site.

The elderly care and rehabilitation department currently provides acute medical care to frail older people in across North Cumbria in the following settings:

Elderly Care beds across the Cumberland Infirmary site, including support for elderly patients with dementia and/or delirium.

  • 30 Elderly Care beds across the West Cumberland Hospital site
  • Hyper Acute Stroke care and rehabilitation
  • Joint Orthogeriatric care on the hip fracture unit
  • Specialist clinics
The department currently has 5 Geriatricians (including Nurse Consultant) and General Medicine Consultants and a Rehabilitation Consultant, as well as a junior medical team


The other members of the MDT include:

  • Specialist Nurses
  • Specialist Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists
  • Specialist Speech and Language therapists
  • Specialist Clinical Neuropsychologists
  • PharmacistsThis vacancy is for a Trust Doctor in Elderly Care at registrar level, for an initial 12 month period, based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. This position offers an exciting opportunity for an applicant interested in pursuing a career in Geriatrics.


The post is primarily intended for a doctor who wishes to specialise in Elderly Care but may also be of interest to those aspiring to a career in Orthogeriatrics, Neurology, Clinical Pharmacology or Acute Medicine.


The post holder will be responsible to day to day management of in-patients under the care of the Consultants alongside the registrars.

This will involve supervision of junior members of the medical team and close cooperation with the nursing staff and other members of the team as well as liaising with other departments including the acute medical assessment unit and accident and emergency.


Duties will include:


  • Day to day management of the inpatients
  • Daily Consultant ward rounds
  • Participation in Parkinson's and frailty clinics
  • Supervision of junior doctors
  • Teaching of junior doctors and medical students
  • Provision of out of hours and oncall cover in acute/general internal medicine
  • Review of referrals requested by other physicians or teams
  • Responding to queries from general practitioners and dealing with correspondence and results
