Trauma services for the local population are provided on the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital site. Elective surgery is provided on the Burnley General Teaching Hospital site.The department of Orthopaedics provides a general Orthopaedic and acute trauma service to the population of East Lancashire.
The trauma service is Consultant led, with 20 trauma lists per week (4 on Monday, 3 per day Tuesday to Friday and 2 per day Saturday and Sunday).
All the Consultants provide a general Orthopaedic service and in addition they have a sub-specialty interest. There are excellent links with teaching units within the North West region.
Operative facilities are provided in 7 laminar flow theatres across the Trust with 4 at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and 3 at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.
The unit is supported by a full range of radiology and pathology services. There are MR facilities on both sites.
We are seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a sub-speciality interest in Lower Limb arthroplasty.
The post does not have any on-call commitments but the Locum Consultant will be expected to undertake trauma lists.
Due to the trauma workload the Trust operates a system of a first and second on-call Consultant for Orthopaedic trauma.
Fracture clinics are undertaken at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.
The post holder will be expected to keep up to date with developments within the specialty by attending appropriate conferences and study courses.

Trauma Cover is provided with a daily afternoon ward round of all patients by the on-call team. A daily Orthogeriatric ward round provides dual care for all inpatients.
SPA (supporting professional activities) will include audit, job planning and clinical management. 1.5 SPA has been documented in the job plan to support revalidation and safe practice. 1 DCC has been allocated to admin time.
