Description
The University College Hospital Interventional Radiology Service provides image-guided interventions for both diagnosis and therapy. It cuts across multiple clinical specialties and sites, including urology, vascular, hepatobiliary, chest, and ENT.


The Interventional Radiology (IR) Clinical Nurse Specialist will play an integral role in the development of a quality driven service and will hold responsibility for the nursing management of urology IR patients admitted to the Westmoreland Street & UCLH Imaging Departments for assessment and treatment under the care of the Interventional Radiology service, whilst working closely with and supporting the wider IR CNS team.


The CNS has a leadership role within the trust and is responsible for the development of innovative nursing practice within the IR and UroIR service.

The post-holder is also expected to facilitate the development of other nurses to benefit patient care and to be an educational resource to all members of the trust wide multi-disciplinary MDT regarding practice in the provision of care.


  • Provide expert nursing advice and support to patients and their families throughout the IR pathway, enabling them to make an informed choice based on all treatment options.
  • Act as a role model in expert practice facilitating and supporting the delivery of direct specialist patient care, assisting staff to develop appropriate plans of care for patients.
  • Participation at the IR meetings, contributing to the discussion and treatment planning/referral decisions.
  • To work in liaison with other specialty CNS' from the referring specialties
  • Patient's management prior to and during interventional sessions.
  • Participation at the ward rounds and planning meetings for IR inpatients.
  • Management and provision of nurse led clinics for new and follow up IR patients.
  • Preassessment of patient prior to procedure and liaison with Anaesthetic, radiology and referring teams as appropriate.
This post will cover clinical care across 2 sites, UCH main site and Westmoreland Street.

However, flexible working can be accommodated and a degree of hybrid working (working from home and on site) where appropriate is also possible.

The service is primarily Monday to Friday and no weekend/ out of hours working is required.

The CNS will help to promote and co-ordinate a seamless pathway of care for this group of patients. Central to the role is a collaborative approach with the multidisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive patient focused service.
