Responsibilities of Night Senior Care Assistant


The senior night care assistant coordinates with the management team and day senior care assistants to ensure residents receive the best possible care.

They ensure that the night care assistants attend training, have the appropriate skills to do their job and supports the night care assistants where appropriate

The role of the senior care assistant is crucial in maintaining the standards of The Old Vicarage.

The Care Management team sets the direction, focus and attitude of the care home, the culture of how the care home is run cascades down from them.

With the assistance, help and support of the senior care assistants it will be become part of the care culture.

The senior care assistants see the residents on a daily basis, they deal with health care professionals and families, the general care staff look to the senior care assistants for guidance on how to treat residents.

The senior care assistants are the people that staff will go to when there is an issue that needs to be understood and possibly fixed.

They are the backbone of the care home.

Night care assistants do not see the residents at their full potential. Residents may be tired, exhausted and confused in the morning and evening.

However, night care assistants are crucial in ensuring that residents care is maintained.

A resident who is distressed, or confused at night may be at their most vulnerable and without high quality care and attention, they will be exhausted during the day.

They will have no quality of life.

Night care assistants see a side of residents that few health care professionals see. They have an incredibly important role in ensuring that the health of residents does not decline. The more vulnerable a resident is, the more important the night care assistant's role is.


Organising

  • Oversee Night Staff and make sure night staff cover absences / annual leave
  • Monitor staff breaks to make sure that the relevant amount of time is taken.
  • Have knowledge of heating, water & electricity controls.
  • Help organise activities & outings for residents.
  • Be responsible for care of clients with dementia.
  • Make sure all appropriate cleaning is done during the night shift.
  • Attends senior care assistant meetings.

Care of Residents

  • Ensure that staff clean, wash & take care of resident's personal hygiene.
  • Ensure staff treat residents with respect and dignity.
  • Check all residents to see that their needs are being met.
  • Observe & ensure care staff assist residents using straps, hoist, Zimmer frames and use correct lifting techniques.
  • Distribute medicines correctly & monitors skills of night care staff who also distribute medicines.
  • Help care staff if sickness reduces staff numbers
  • To be on call 2 days each week

Training

  • Undertake training for senior staff as & when required.
  • Assist in the training & induction of new staff

On call structure
On call 2 days per week


The on-call staff member must be close enough to return to work within 45 minutes of being contacted and must be in a fit state to provide appropriate assistance.

On call from 07:00 - 07:00 the following day

On call staff are the member of staff of last resort if no one can be found for a day or night shift during the on-call period
