2. Job Purpose

  • To assist the delivery of an effective and safe Aseptic Service.
  • To aseptically dispense cytotoxic products, parenteral nutrition and other injectables.
  • To assist in the environmental and physical monitoring of the Boole Aseptic Unit maintaining appropriate records of microbiological cleanliness, pressures, room temperatures and equipment temperatures.
  • To carry out reception duties, including handing over medication to delivery drivers.
  • To assist in the training and supervision of work of new staff allocated to the team.
  • All duties are carried out in accordance with good manufacturing practice (GMP) and good clinical practice (GCP) and according to departmental policies and procedures.

4. Duties

1. To set up raw materials, consumables and equipment for all products in accordance with defined operating procedures.


2. To accurately and consistently participate in the aseptic dispensing of products using aseptic manipulation technique in accordance with defined standard operating procedures.


3. To dispense pre-prepared aseptic products, oral chemotherapy, and support medication including completing associated paperwork.


4. To prepare worksheets and labels using the Pharmacy IT system for individual aseptic preparation of cytotoxic drugs, total parenteral nutrition and CIVAs products in accordance with defined operating procedures.


5. To take part in the in-process checking, worksheet /label checks, and product assembly checks as required in accordance with defined operating procedures.


6. To label, package and distribute medication in accordance with defined operating procedures.


7. To maintain up to date all the necessary competencies. These include but are not limited to valid hand washing, gowning, transfer, dispensing, operator broth tests, in-process checking and cleaning validations.


8. To assist in stock control, checks, ordering levels, and storage of medicines. This includes starting materials, consumables and aseptically prepared batch products purchased from external Specials suppliers.


9. To assist in the ordering and management of patient specific and batch pre-prepared aseptic products (cytotoxic, high risk injectables and parenteral nutrition) from external
Specials suppliers in a timely, efficient and safe manner and ensure all necessary quality assurance checks are completed.


10. To ensure maintenance of stock levels to ensure sufficient drugs and consumables are available for use within the unit.


11. To ensure accurate stock rotation, stock takes and expiry date checks are carried out.


12. To participate in the regular environmental and physical monitoring and quality control tasks of the Aseptic Unit to ensure the unit environment and product quality remains within specified limits.


13. To assist with all Quality Control duties such as weekly and daily settle plating.


14. To be responsible for ensuring all laundry is packed and sent for processing.


15. To clean all classified and un-classified clean rooms, isolators and equipment according to departmental procedures and participate in regular cleaning rota.


16. To sanitise raw materials and equipment for use in clean room areas.


17. To ensure all equipment and facilities within the Aseptic Unit are in good working order and maintained, and assist the Senior Aseptic Technician if remedial actions are required.


18. To assist with general housekeeping duties such a cleaning trays, stock checking and filing.


19. To check that worksheets and documents have been completed accurately by other members of the team.


20. To accurately complete all documentation needed for Quality Assurance and archive and file appropriately.


21. To assist in updating of Standard Operating Procedures, information documents and instructions relevant to the Aseptic Unit, as requested by the senior aseptic technician.


22. To carry out all the work in accordance with Departmental Policies and Health and Safety
Policies.


23. To report internal errors and deviations in accordance with defined standard operating procedures.


24. To safely handle hazardous materials and waste according to Trust policies without further increasing the risk to themselves or their colleagues.


25. To work in confined area using positive and negative pressure isolators for a period of time.


26. To supervise trainees and rotational staff allocated to the section under the guidance of the aseptic technicians.


27. To assist with the training of new staff in GMP, aseptic preparation and safe working practices
