Job description:

Maritime transport is the backbone of international trade and the global economy.

The UK's maritime sector is substantial: 95% of UK exports and imports are transported through shipping.

The UK Government has a net zero target by 2050 across the economy, including domestic shipping. In 2021, UK domestic shipping alone emitted more greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions than buses and rail combined.

Clean maritime technologies are immature and will vary according to ship type.

The UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme in DfT is delivering a suite of Research and Development (R&D) interventions, designed to progress clean maritime technologies, such as electric, hydrogen and ammonia, from early concept stage to operational deployment.

Major interventions include the Clean Maritime Research Hub, the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition and the Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure scheme.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the successful delivery of current UK SHORE interventions to ensure value for money.
  • Manage the relationship with key delivery partners, including Innovate UK and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), to deliver interventions.
  • Support the maximisation of benefits for existing interventions, through organising events and disseminating project outputs to stakeholders.
  • Help design interventions as part of a bid into the next Spending Review.
  • Support crossdivisional work to deliver the policies set out in the upcoming refresh of Clean Maritime Plan.
  • Lead on briefing and correspondence including briefings for ministers and responses to Parliamentary Questions.
For further information, please see the attached Role Profile.
