Description
Located within the Student Support Services department of Student Journey, this
role will work across the University to develop a student-centered approach to
achieving a greater understanding of the support needs of our BAME students,
developing targeted and proactive services in response. This role will be closely
involved with our Students' Union (SU), working together to create positive
change.

The postholder will support the delivery of our Shine a Light project which aims to

improve our understanding of the lived experiences of our BAME students

studying at Sunderland and London campuses. The postholder will raise awareness

of our support services and encourage our BAME students to engage with these

opportunities, particularly in relation to their mental health and wellbeing.


Key Responsibilities

and Accountabilities:


  • To work closely with our BAME students in the codevelopment of service
provision with BAME student voices central, using a 'talking head' approach to
increase visibility.

  • To increase BAME student engagement including relevant SU societies, events
and volunteering across the University and within the Students' Union.

  • To target and provide reactive support for our BAME students, incorporating
both into our Flying Start and induction programmes.

  • To increase the proportion of BAME students who access Wellbeing and
Disability support and engage with health promotion activities.

  • To reduce the risk of the nonreporting of mental health disability at the point
of enrolment and beyond and for international students; engaging with
students before they arrive in the UK.

  • To increase GP registrations thereby increasing access to timely support.
  • To undertake research to gain more awareness of SJ services for BAME
students.

  • To ensure effective collection, interpretation and management of student
support data relating to BAME students and to make recommendations for
changes in practice.

  • To identify and propose solutions to identified support needs for our BAME
students.

  • To work with students to develop health promotion directed to our BAME
students.

  • To build on our partnerships with external, specialist providers to develop
targeted mental health promotion and to create specific community mental
health student led community resources for our BAME students.

  • To work alongside Social Prescribing initiatives in the city to increase the
number of BAME students involved with volunteering and accessing social
support.

  • To work alongside Public Health colleagues to create 'cultural competence'
training for mental health and primary care staff, upskilling and developing
awareness of the specific needs of our BAME students. This can be offered to
Personal Academic Tutors and embedded within Staff Training with the voice
of our students at the heart of development.

  • To gain further understanding in relation to our online reporting tool and
sense of safety within the City for BAME students.

Special

Circumstances:

Regular evening and occasional weekend working as required to fulfill demands on
the service.

Attendance at open days and other events as required.

This post will be for 23 months.

  • Educated to degree level.

Knowledge and Experience:


  • An understanding of the wide range of student issues and an awareness of
the wider context impacting upon the student experience/engagement,
particularly in relation to BAME students.

  • Experience of engaging effectively with both individuals and groups.
  • A commitment to, and interest in community development.
  • A robust understanding of equality and diversity.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including a thorough
knowledge of social media.

  • Strong time management and organisational skills.
