Science Lead Food Contaminants

What you'll be doing:


  • Formalise Fera's chemical food safety R&D capability as part of the food integrity (safety, quality and authenticity) offer so as to present it coherently to industry / enforcement / regulator stakeholder groups in a compelling manner
  • Play a key role in the expansion and delivery of Fera's work on chemical contaminants in food to ensure product integrity (safety, quality and authenticity). Develop our science offer in chemical contaminants in food identifying and developing new products and services for national and international markets.
  • Prepare scientific research proposals to address customer requirements.
  • Contribute to the delivery of and reporting on scientific projects on chemical foods and food safety, quality and authenticity.
  • Present Fera's research and services on the podium at national and International conferences, meetings and other events.
  • Prepare high quality scientific publications for peer reviewed journals and thought leadership articles for publication in the grey literature and social media.
  • Deliver on financial targets for growth in the science platform.
  • In partnership with Head of Programme and other Fera Science Leads, ensure sustainable growth by contributing towards the Programme's business plans, ensuring alignment with Fera's business and science strategies.
  • Identify and develop the potential in emerging scientists through inspiring, mentoring and coaching Fera colleagues.
  • Grow Fera's reputation as a leading international science organisation and increase public visibility of Fera through internal and external activities
  • Collaborate strategically with other research institutes, universities and industry research sectors with the capability and appetite to act as supervisor for postgraduate studies.

What we're looking for:


  • Have an established reputation and national / international profile in food analysis and research with a focus on the safety assessment of chemical foodstuffs and / or food supplements which is founded in industry, research institutes and / or academia.
  • Have a proven ability to win competitive funding from research body and Government Departmental schemes as well as project revenues from commercial clients B2B.
  • Be able to lead multidisciplinary teams to provide integrated scientific services to address the food safety, quality and authenticity challenges of our customers.
  • Have a record in science leadership and managing projects working with a variety of colleagues across multiple and related disciplines to deliver innovative and valuable support to our customers, partners and stakeholders from both public and private sectors.
  • Be able to evaluate the full commercial impact (benefit) for Fera's business of the ventures they instigate and lead.
  • Have experience of delivering scientific outputs for inclusion in chemical food dossiers for submission to bodies such as the European Food Safety Authority and the UK Food Standards Agency.
  • Understand (or have firsthand experience of) international assurance, certification and audit schemes under the leading certification bodies.
  • Have a demonstrable understanding of the regulatory requirements for chemical
