What we're looking for


A Principal Human Factors Specialist working within the Marine Decarbonisation Hub (MDH) who will identify, scope and lead human factors (HF) - related activities in this challenging and rapidly developing area.

As well as providing deep human factors expertise, you will also be responsible for managing the work of other colleagues and working closely with other experts both within and beyond LR.

You will also contribute to the promulgation and promotion of the work through publications and presentations.


The Lloyd's Register MDH is a LR Foundation funded programme with the purpose of accelerating the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.

This is achieved through providing evidence-based insight to enable informed decision making and building partnerships to unlock barriers in transition pathways to innovate and demonstrate routes to scale.

The Hub produces research, evidence-based insight for stakeholders in the maritime ecosystem including government and finance, covering sustainability in everything from energy sources to onboard low carbon technologies.

Addressing the safety challenges presented by decarbonisation is a critically important element of the Hub's work.

You will

  • Lead and manage the HF capability within the MDH
  • Stay abreast of developments in the field of maritime decarbonisation to identify issues that may require further study from a HF perspective
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to define and initiate collaborative HF projects
  • Lead and support projects ensuring that they are completed in accordance with quality system requirements, cost structures and budgetary / contractual commitments
  • Work effectively with experts from other disciplines (particularly technical safety / risk) within the MDH, the wider LR and stakeholder organisations.
  • Oversee and take a leading role in the preparation of project outputs such as reports and technical papers
  • Be proactive in disseminating the findings of work done at external events (such as conferences and webinars)
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and industry awareness
  • Act as a mentor and technical authority to other team members, supporting their development through coaching and effective knowledge transfer, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation

What you bring

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd's Register in Human Factors Engineering, Psychology, or a related field (minimum of two years programme) or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship's officer
  • A minimum of 10 years' experience in leading a team of Human Factors specialists
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution (E.g., British Psychological Society, Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, etc.)
  • Extensive experience and technical knowledge in Human Factors techniques / principles, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Significant experience in conducting user research, interviews, testing, and data analysis
  • Excellent communication / influencing skills as well as strong teamworking and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work, with the ability to produce and technically review comprehensive and detailed written reports
  • Experience in Marine, Oil and Gas and/or Energy Sectors.
