Job description:


As a Senior User Researcher you will be a key figure in service teams, planning research and leading the user researchers in the generation of feedback and insight, that service teams need, to build a clear picture of their users and deliver solutions that they need.


You will be responsible for supporting the continuous professional and skills development of user researchers and will ensure that research is delivered in line with recognised standards.


This role will include line management for a team of researchers who work closely with interaction designers, service designers and wider blended teams to iteratively improve services for users and their work also helps inform policy and strategy development at DVLA.


Other associated responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the delivery of user research, including primary quantitative and qualitative research and secondary desk research.
  • Ensuring that use of customer/user data is processed legally in accordance with relevant legislation and guidance, such as Data Protection Act.
  • Developing and managing effective relationships with stakeholders to understand their expectations.
  • Managing a complex and busy research programme to meet the demands and requirements of stakeholders, allocating work to user researchers.
  • Providing quality assurance of research to ensure that methods and outputs are compliant with recognised research standards and that analysis and interpretation of raw research data returns high quality and
actionable user and employee insight.

  • Acting as an advocate for user research, promoting the work of the team within the organisation and the benefits brought by user research and needs, documenting requirements to support robust delivery of research.
  • Lead a team within an Agile project environment to deliver research in support of iterative service design, liaising with Senior Interaction Designers at DVLA.

Person specification:


About You


Senior User Researchers need to understand and lead the delivery of a range of quantitative and qualitative research methods to reveal actionable customer insights.

You will have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to quickly develop recommendations based on quantitative and qualitative evidence.

You will also have an eye for detail to ensure that research remains compliant with strict standards and ethics.


You are passionate about developing others and will actively coach and mentor those on your team, to support their professional development and to assure the quality of the research being delivered.

You will be comfortable working with data, from gathering and analysis through to design and development.


You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and work with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.


You will need to act as a persuasive advocate for user needs and conduct research to ensure that DVLA services are simple and easy to use for all user groups, including users who are lower on the digital inclusion scale or have an access need.

MRS certificate in Market Research or willing to work towards once in post is essential.
