Description

Fixed term for two years

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the postholder will join a research team initially undertaking the lead Geophysicist role of the NERC-funded, and industry supported, Copper Basin Exploration Sciences project (CuBES) and transitioning into leading a geothermal seismology project in the Southwestern Rift of the same Central Africa region.

The Copper Basin Exploration Science Project (CuBES) is a multi-disciplinary project designed to add innovative approaches, methods, and technology to industrial copper exploration at the basin scale.

The researcher will complete the field acquisition of the seismic data and lead its processing, interpretation and integration with other geophysical and geological data collected along the same corridor.

The Geothermal Project comprises working with GeoKalahari Energy to monitor fault activity and depth of potential fluid pathways of the Bweenga Hot Springs.

This project will explore the fault activity created as the thermal reservoir is produced during a long-term pilot project.

The researcher will be the main contact with GeoKalahari energy and will lead the deployment of nodes, the servicing of them and the processing and interpretation of ambient seismic results.

Incorporating it with the regional seismology of the CuBES profile and local geology. This work will also inform the hydrothermal processes active in Africa's Southwestern Rift.

About you

You will be responsible for managing your own academic research and administrative activities, and for developing and conducting an original research processing and interpreting plan for the data collected.

You will complete and demobilise the CuBES research programme involving the acquisition of passive seismic data for the first experiment of its kind to address the Central African copper basin.

You will be responsible for adapting existing and developing new research methodologies and materials, preparing working theories and analysing qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining theories as appropriate.

You will also contribute ideas for new research projects, develop ideas for generating research income and collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles.

You will hold, or be close to completion, of a relevant PhD/DPhil and have previous experience of undertaking geophysical or geological fieldwork and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

You will ideally have experience of independently managing a discrete area of a research project installing and operating networks of passive seismometers (in remote locations) and calculating receiver functions.

You must also have excellent communication skills including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings.

For further details of the role please see the job description.

This role is fixed term for 2 years.
