As an apprentice you will join a small, highly trained team that answer 999 emergency calls and mobilise fire appliances, specialist equipment and officers and take an active part in a wide range of incidents.

You need to be capable of responding calmly and effectively to an emergency, you will use your excellent communication and keyboard skills (requirement 30 words/minute).

You will follow an 18-month structured training and development programme, leading to becoming a competent Fire Control Operator.


About the role:


  • You will be required to work a 12hour shift pattern, including weekends and Bank Holidays.
  • Receive emergency and nonemergency telephone calls.
  • Mobilise resources in response to emergency calls and/or requests for assistance using the mobilising system provided.
  • Communicate with Officers and other agencies of incidents in accordance with procedures.
  • Operate computer information retrieval systems.
  • Participate in the routine testing of equipment.
  • Work in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act, ensuring that confidentiality is maintained at appropriate levels.
You will have GCSE Grade A* to C, or Level 9-4 qualifications in English and Mathematics (or a recognised equivalent i.e. Functional Skills Level 2).


Selection assessment date:

w/c 11th December 202- Successful applicants will be required to complete an on-line assessment which will assess communication skills, comprehension, keyboard skills and listening skills.

w/c 1st January 2024

English Fluency:

The ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post (for those whose language is a signed language the provision of a sign language interpreter who speaks English to the necessary standard of fluency will be required).
