We are looking for a permanent Information Specialist to join our Innovation Policy team.

The role will sit within BSI's Research & Intelligence team under 'BSI Knowledge', the standards publishing division of BSI.

The team combines the expertise of Information professionals, Data Analysts, and Market Research and Insight staff to deliver high-quality standards and regulatory intelligence, market insights, and industry research.

The team works closely with sector colleagues, both internal and external, to deliver useful strategic and tactical research and intelligence.

The team conducts both primary and secondary research for a range of internal and external government and private sector clients.


The job holder will also be involved in a cross-business collaboration to ensure knowledge acquired from enquiry and research activities is shared effectively across Knowledge Solutions and more widely, if appropriate.


Also, the successful job holder will work with the Senior Research, Data, and Analytics Manager to identify and implement improvements to the enquiry and research services in order to respond to emerging client needs and capitalise on opportunities presented by improved discoverability of our committee and standards content assets.


Additionally, the role may support the Research & Data Analysts at specific stages of the delivery process of commercial research services such as Standards Landscapes.


The role will provide an interesting and varied workload including conducting research across a range of areas of emergent technology and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

The role will involve a number of areas of work


These are as follows:
Member Enquiry Service - to provide an enquiry service to BSI Members, and external and internal customers


This includes:

  • Quality assures responses to related enquiries.
  • Monitor the volume and types of enquiries to support further service development in line with BSI members' needs
Delivering Due Diligence and Domain Research reports supporting the development of new standards


This involves:

  • Creating search matrices to facilitate both the keyword searching and the classification of standards phases of the process.
  • Running complex Boolean search queries on BSI's inhouse standards database
Service Development - responsible for the continuous development of the Member Enquiry Service (MES) including:

  • Validating enquiries coverage and develop a plan for further service iteration over 2023 and beyond.
  • Building on work done to date to identify and collate sources of information to help deliver new enquiry types based on the latest UK legislative development and new trade agreements.
  • Further development and maintenance of the existing inhouse wiki covering frequently asked questions for internal and external use.
  • Liaising with colleagues across BSI Knowledge division to ensure we are aware of all relevant development in terms of standards governance.
  • Establishing and developing a network for valueadded support. This may include identifying relevant staff in other BSI departments and divisions, as well as externally (Trade Associations and Policy organisations), to access the information required to answer enquiries.
Standards Watch reports - to keep clients up to date with the latest thinking in their related areas of standardization on a monthly or quarterly basis


This requires:

  • Conducting keyword searches to identify relevantly.
  • Assessing the relevancy of standards according to themes.
  • Transforming standardsrelated data into clientfacing outputs using Excel and/or interactive data visualization tools.

What we are looking for:
Education/Qualifications

  • Degree level or equivalent in the information or research services
Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Experience of related work experience: to cover conducting or using research, and service delivery.
  • Experience in dealing with complex enquiries, requiring a rapid turnaround time and highquality response
  • Customerfocused (internal & external), with a consultative approach to understanding customer requirements and issues.
  • Experience with bibliographic databases and internet searches.
  • Ability to determine relevant information for clients.
  • Experience of working directly (face toface and remotely) with clients on research briefs, the design of research services and the delivery and presentation of research reports.
  • Experience in identifying process and service improvements and implementing these in collaboration with others.
