Are you an experienced Band 7 Midwife looking for your next step? Do you want to use your knowledge to drive forward excellence in maternity care?


If successful you will be joining one of the largest trusts in the UK and will help lead the care hundreds of women and overseeing the births of approximately 1200 babies every year.


The Trust is based over three sites - Southend, Basidon and Broomfield who work closely together to deliver safe and effective care.

This role is based at Southend Hospital which is the smallest of the three but is equally dynamic and proactive at delivering patient focused care.

Through strong leadership and effective management, you will support the ward and departmental senior sisters/senior charge nurses to promote and deliver excellence in nursing and midwifery care maintaining and continually improve clinical standards and patient experience and care.

  • Advise and support the Head of Midwifery on professional nursing issues and provide professional leadership for staff groups.
  • To ensure performance standards are met and take the necessary action if they are not.
  • Directly manage ward managers and through this staff group ensure that all members of the ward team are managed in accordance with trust policy, procedure and best practice.
  • Ensure ward managers produce accurate, timely information about staff including competencies, education and development needs and that this data contributes to an annual workforce plan.
  • Ensure ward managers use bank / temporary staff effectively.
  • Ensure that effective risk management systems are in place within the ward areas and contribute to service strategies to manage risk.
  • Be accountable to the Head of Midwifery for ensuring all services and financial budgets are efficiently managed.
  • To promote and maintain clinical practice in line with Trust policies and procedures, adhering to NMC regulation at all times.
  • To investigate complaints, incidences, grievances, performance issues, developing action plans and make recommendations as required.
  • Review skill mix and deployment of staff within the area of responsibility, working closely with other matrons within the directorate, taking into account the patient acuity/dependency scores.

About the unit:

The antenatal ward has an inpatient area of seven beds.

From this ward area both Triage and Day Assessment services also run, and the matron's role will help to ensure that these three services run cohesively.

The postnatal ward is a 25 bedded unit.

Our aim is to support our new mothers in the early stages of the postnatal period and ensure that discharges are timely and appropriate.


The infant feeding team are also based on the postnatal ward and the matron for this area will line manage this team as part of their role.

Southend currently has BFI level 3 status.

  • Ensuring that the patient experience is of the highest quality inspiring patient and public confidence. This will be achieved through high visibility, accessibility and surveillance.
  • Leading by example to guarantee all patients are treated with compassion, dignity and respect placing value on the diversity of the local community and beyond.
  • Promote best practice in the prevention of infection through ensuring a clean and safe environment
  • Oversee the delivery of high quality, safe and effective nursing or midwifery care focused on improving outcomes and experiences for patients, families and carers and effectively managing risk.
  • Support the Director of Midwifery and Head of Midwifery in achieving National Target
