This is a Research Associate position funded by the Wellcome Trust.

This post will be offered on a 24 months fixed-term contract

This is Full time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • Undertake original biomedical research as an integral member of a group working on understanding the principles of circuit wiring and dynamics in the mouse cortex
  • Carry out in vivo imaging of inhibitory synapses during development.
  • Modify network/cell activity with opto/chemogenetic tools
  • Explore the effects modulating sensory inputs on inhibitory synapse dynamics
  • Link findings to neurodevelopmental disorders
  • The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post._
Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria


  • PhD in biological sciences (or close to completion)
  • Expertise with in vivo imaging in mice
  • Expertise with handling mice
  • Expertise with delivery of genetic probes in vivo (electroporation or viral)
  • Knowledge of image analysis
  • Basic knowledge of statistics
  • Immunocytochemistry
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good knowledge of neuroscience
Desirable criteria


  • Knowledge of synapse structure and function
  • Expertise in synaptogenesis
  • Experience with opto
- or chemo-genetic approaches
