About this client/child:
David (59) is a calm and quiet gentleman who likes his independence around the house that he shares with his wife.
He enjoys gardening and sharing time watching a bit of TV whilst having chats with his support or getting out to various places and appointmentsin his wheelchair adapted vehicle - which David drives himself.
He likes driving his wife to work, and himself to his appointments. David likes to tinker with and is skilled in repairing and building furniture and machinery. David has daughters and many grandchildrenwho fill his life on the weekends.David has a spinal injury and requires support for all his physical needs, including personal care and assistance to implement his home exercise and physiotherapy programme.
He has a full routine developed by a multi-Disciplinaryteam; Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy, Hydrotherapy and Speech.Before David's Spinal injury he liked to plan and prepare meals, which is something he is starting to do again with support.
Overview of role:
As David's support worker, you will support him to start the day with his personal care routine, dressing, and physiotherapy exercises (full training by a qualified physiotherapist).
David's wife will be around for a few hours before she leaves for workto help prep the day and chat about the plans.
David then drives his wife to work, with the companionship of his support worker. If for any reason David cannot drive, his support worker will ideally do the driving.The days can be quiet and calm, made up oftherapists visiting, an outing to hydrotherapy, shopping, or a walk in the park.
There may be some light chores to do whilst David rests in the afternoon, and then supporting him to prepare dinner before his wife returns after 7.00pm.
This role offers 3 daysper week, Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 9.00am to 7.30pm. The salary is between £ £21.50 gross per hour DoE.Who this job would suit:
David's transfers require manual handling and the use of a hoist, so you need to be physically fit and strong.
David likes lots of quiet time, so knowing when to offer company and support and knowing when to stand back iskey; a *female support worker who is considerate and kind.
You'll be sensitive to working within a family home and respectful of the family's privacy. The family would prefer someone who can take over the driving on occasions.Knowledge and understandingof preventing wounds and the care of them is essential, although no nurse duties are required with this.
