Work within and support the Back Care Team in promoting back care and a safety culture, delivering a strategy aimed at reducing musculoskeletal injuries within the Trust.


  • Support the development of manual handling training across OUH to ensure managers meet their statutory obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations.
  • Provide support and development to the Back Care Facilitators within your areas of responsibility.
  • Provide advice and guidance relating to manual handling within identified areas of responsibility and respond to patient referrals relating to complex handling cases.
  • Organise workload with mínimal supervision seeking support / advice from other members of the Back Care Team where appropriate.
  • Provide proactive and reactive advice and recommendations to managers to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury.
  • Trial manual handling equipment in order to ensure staff and patients have access to the most suitable equipment available.
  • Provide advice, support and information on all manual handling issues involving moving and handling of people and loads, so that risks to employees and other service users are minimised.
  • Deputise on occasions for the Lead/Senior Back Care Advisor when required.
  • Contribute towards and support the strategic and operational direction of the Back Care Team.
  • Work with the Senior/Lead Back Care Advisor to develop, update and implement policies and procedures in accordance with manual handling legislation, codes of practice and Trust standards supporting facilitators and managers to implement such changes at departmental level.
  • Attend and actively participate in divisional and Trustwide meetings representing Back Care Team.
  • Contribute towards quality and improvement initiatives being undertaken in the department, as directed by Senior/Lead Back Care Advisor or wider members of the Learning and Education team.
  • Assist in the implementation of changes within the Trust in response to updates in legislation, professional guidance or recognised best practice and to inform and support managers and Back Care Facilitators to implement such changes at departmental level.
  • Work with other members of the back care team to maintain up to date online resources for the Back Care Team and OUH employees
  • Work with manual handling training colleagues to ensure continuity and consistency between manual handling practices in the workplace and training being provided in the classroom / online.
  • When required, support the delivery of theory and practical training programmes for all aspects of manual handling operations, which meet the employer's statutory obligations and which reflects the level of understanding and learning needs within all staff groups across the Trust.
  • The post holder will support, supervise and where necessary train with Back Care Facilitators making modifications to handling techniques as necessary.
  • Work with divisions and directorates to identify manual handling risks and advise managers and Back Care Facilitators accordingly to reduce risk to the lowest level reasonably practicable.
  • Work with the Back Care Team to regularly review training course content to ensure it reflects current legislation and best practice.
  • Keep current and accurate up to date training records of all training and assessment criteria delivered by Back Care Team, for review by external auditors if required.
  • Motivate, educate and support Back Care Facilitators to maintain their skills and knowledge to ensure compliance with recommended standards.
Explore creative approaches to meet learning needs of different staff groups, overcoming barriers such as communication, e.g. supporting those for whom English is not a first language.

  • Provide advice to departmental and clinical staff in manual handling situations either in emergency or through planned meetings or within local training sessions. In clinical areas this involves multidisciplinary discussions, advice on patient manual handling assessment forms and provision / advice on specialist equipment.
  • In some circumstances it may be necessary to work clinically based in clinical areas/departments, to assess and review practice or demonstrate techniques and skills. A summary report of findings and recommendations should then be written for departmental manager/Back Care Facilitator.
  • Keep abreast of clinical developments and research that will have implications for safe practice and to regularly visit/attend clinical areas/Back Exchange meetings to maintain awareness of current person / object manual handling issues.
  • Promote local decision making through the implementation and evaluation of evidence based protocols/guidelines e.g. patient handling risk assessment, bariatric protocols.
