The ANNP team are instrumental in the planning and implementing of very successful Quality Improvement (QI) projects on the unit.

Many of the QI projects have won awards or have had posters accepted for presentations at conferences and is a mixed medical and nursing collaboration.


The post holder would be expected to work as a junior tier practitioner as part of the first on call medical rota for neonatal medicine.

The post holder will join the clinical team and contribute to the delivery and organisation of the newborn service including neonatal critical care review action plans, GIRFT, lead and deliver quality improvement projects.

There may be opportunities for career progression including move to Tier 2 based on individual competencies and as part of future service development.

The post would be located within the Women's and Children's Department of UHCW NHS Trust. The neonatal department provides a NICU service in Coventry within the West Midlands Perinatal Network. There are approximately 6000 babies delivered at UHCW per year. The neonatal unit has 8 intensive care, 8 high dependency and 20 special care and transitional care cots. We also host a successful Neonatal Community Outreach Service for LMNS.


The post holder will join a team of West Midlands deanery senior and junior specialty trainees and Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners to provide cover on Tier 1 rota.

The post holder will have an overall responsibility for the assessment of care needs and the delivery of optimal care at a level equivalent to that of a junior grade doctor.

There is a full shift system in operation which is EWTD compliant.

The post holder will form part of this rota working shifts as designated on our neonatal unit and will be accountable for improving and complying with infection control practices.

There is a separate on-call rota for consultants and registrars covering the neonatal unit.

There are 6 ST1-3 doctors who work a full shift rota, 5 ST 4-8 doctors working full time in neonatology and 2 community ST4-8 who contribute to the on call neonatal rota.

There are 8 WTE ANNPs including 2 student ANNPs. ANNP team contribute to the junior and middle grade rota.

The successful post holder would provide cover in the neonatal department on the Tier 1 rota, support colleagues and attend deliveries as required.

Duties will be split between Intensive care, high dependency, special care, transitional care and post-natal ward.

Leads in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the holistic, evidence based care of the sick neonates and their families within Postnatal Wards, SCBU, High Dependency, Intensive Care area including stabilisation and transportation.

This involves:

Communicating the role of the Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner to nursing / medical staff, senior management and user groups.

Communicating effectively with a wide range of people including nursing, allied health profession, medical and social work colleagues, patients, carers and managers at all leve
