INTERNAL VACANCY ONLY
Do you want to research our stored collection and share stories about objects to engage our audiences? Are you a good communicator who can collaborate with others effectively?

About Us

  • The NCC Collections Consolidation Project builds on work developed through the One Collection programme, SMG's major strategic initiative to reimagine how its worldleading collection of objects relating to science, technology, transport, medicine, and the media is cared for, accessed and shared. The Consolidation project will deliver further consolidation of space, hazard resolution and improved documentation, across hangars at the National Collections Centre.

We are now recruiting for an Assistant Curator based at the National Collections Centre at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon.

This is a full-time, fixed term contract until March 2025, working 35 hours per week.

About the role

  • As Assistant Curator you will work with the Curator Team Leader across the collections, providing research and practical collections support to the Consolidation Project team. In liaison with the SMG Curators, you will identify and catalogue objects, improve existing records, and undertake tasks towards acquisition and disposal. You may work with volunteers and will help to engage our audiences with the project and the collection.
You will carry out research towards object provenance, identification, and improved cataloguing. In addition to sharing collections stories through Collections Online, social media, our blog, the SMG Journal, and elsewhere.

About you

Crucially, you will have good research skills and the ability to use your good written and verbal communication skills and creative approach to engage our audiences with stored collections.

You will also be able to organise and prioritise work in order to meet deadlines.
