Head of Privacy
- General Manager role in Rio Tinto Ethics & Compliance
- Manage our global data privacy programme and provide legal and compliance advice across Rio Tinto's operations (more than 35 countries)

Rio Tinto Ethics & Compliance (E&C) is responsible for the implementation of the Rio Tinto Business Integrity programme throughout the Rio Tinto Group.

Reporting to the Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer in London you will be driving Rio Tinto's data privacy programme to ensure it continues to:- address risk (including through benchmarking against other global B2B companies), and
Your accountabilities will include:
- Managing and working collaboratively with a small team of expert data privacy lawyers and the E&C Data Privacy Leads, across multiple time zones
- Working with the broader E&C team to continue to embed the data privacy programme, including through training, communications and monitoring
- Building strong partnerships with other parts of Rio Tinto, including Cyber Security and IST, HR, HSEC (Health, Safety, Environment and Communities), Procurement, Rio Tinto Legal and the Business Conduct Office
- Working with the business on major projects, including outsourcing and insourcing and the introduction of significant new technologies.
What you'll bring
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
- University qualifications in law; additional certifications (eg iapp) in data privacy highly desirable
- Legal practicing certificate or licence to give legal advice in at least one of our major operating jurisdictions e.g. Australia, UK, US, Canada
- Very substantial experience advising on the data privacy laws of Australia and the UK, with experience in advising on data privacy laws of other major Rio Tinto operating jurisdictions (such as the EU, Canada, the USA, China, New Zealand) being highly desirable
- Demonstrated experience in data privacy program development and management
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to influence people at all levels and across all disciplines
- Sensitivity to risk and commercial issues and strong facilitation skills
- Ability to handle matters discretely and confidentially
- Sensitivity to cultural and language issues
- Outstanding ability to communicate in English (written and oral) to interact effectively at all levels of the Group including senior management
- Experience in interacting with regulators/regulatory agencies
- Ability to detect emerging trends (particularly in technology) and develop appropriate responses
- Willingness to travel as needed
- Additional practical experience working in other relevant areas of law (such as technology and outsourcing, employment law, human rights law) or in cyber security will be considered valuable.
