    The Role: Somali Language Specialist

    As a Somali linguist for MI5 or GCHQ, you'll support high-value activities that keep the country safe. Your knowledge of Somali language, culture, ideology, and politics will be a significant asset.

    You'll analyze material in Somali, providing insights to analysts, investigators, and operational teams. You'll work autonomously, prioritize tasks, and communicate with stakeholders. Your expertise will help identify nuances, extract key information, and support intelligence efforts.

    About You

    No experience or qualifications are required, but you must have strong language skills in Somali, excellent English, and a good knowledge of Somali culture, history, religion, and politics. You should be proficient at a C1 level on the CEFR framework or equivalent.

    Proficiency at C1 level or higher means you can understand demanding texts and conversations, express ideas effectively, and create detailed texts on complex topics. Your proficiency could come from growing up in a multilingual family, military language training, or academic study. You should be inquisitive, curious, analytical, and a confident communicator.

    Training and Development

    Upon joining, you will receive comprehensive induction and training on tools, methods, and the role's context. Ongoing language training, immersion sessions, and internal courses are available to support your development. Funding for language qualifications such as CertTrans and DipTrans is also provided.

    Rewards and Benefits

    MI5 offers a starting salary of £39,152, with potential language allowances. GCHQ offers a starting salary of £36,408, plus an additional £3,120 after six months. Benefits include annual leave, performance recognition, development budgets, flexible working, season ticket loans, pension schemes, and on-site facilities.
