An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Building Officer at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust to join our busy Estates & Facilities Management Team.

They will be responsible for the provision of a highly developed specialist service, technical and administrative advice and to support the Head of Estates (Operations), and to also support all estates personnel within the maintenance function of the Directorate.

They will undertake delegated work associated with estates operations and maintenance activity and be responsible for managing and complying with all statutory instruments and guidance ensuring best practice related to the effective operation of the Trusts estate.

This will include the building structure and fabric including roofs, external drainage and internal fabric, flooring, decoration and sign posting, ensuring the most efficient and economical mix of direct and contract labour.

The post holder is responsible for all aspects of the building maintenance of the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Estate.

This includes buildings, roads, grounds and gardens


Compile prioritised annual estimates for capital building maintenance works, for submission to the Assistant Head of Estates - Operations and implement agreed funded schemes.


Control the budget allocated to the building maintenance section and to ensure that the section stays within the set limits.


Liaise with the statutory authorities in reviewing and amending as necessary the road traffic order in relation to site roads.

The Nottingham University Hospitals Trust is a large acute hospital spread across 3 sites in the City delivering excellent care to the local residents.

The in house maintenance team is made of a workforce comprising of 60 tradesmen from different disciplines providing on-site service 24 7 to the Trust ensuring that patient care is delivered safely and without interruption.

This vacancy would suit a qualified professional person who feels they can bring something extra to the team and enhance the service we provide.

Along with the salary annual leave starts at 27 days a year plus Bank Holidays.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Manage the Building section staff and direct labour, undertaking the necessary recruitment within establishment. Ensure that all Trust HR policies are complied with. Closely monitor and manage timekeeping, sickness and absence.

Liaise with Consultants and Architects appointed as agents to undertake projects. Work closely with the Capital Estates Development section and with the Engineering section of EFM

Take part in inspections, working groups and any other initiative, agreeing action and implementing action plans as necessary.

Ensure compliance with all Financial Standing Orders.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • BSc in building, surveying or HNC/D with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience with supplementary training providing evidence of working at BSc level.
Desirable criteria

  • Qualification in management, site or general supervision.
  • Qualification in safe working with Asbestos.
Experience

Essential criteria

  • At least 5 years experience in building or facilities maintenance at a senior level.
  • A proven commitment to the efficient and effective management of maintenance within a building environment.
Desirable criteria

  • A knowledge/understanding of Health Service standards and regulations.
Communication and relationship skills

  • Develops relationships in the wider Facilities Management community. Looks for and affects a 'winwin' relationship in negotiation with others
Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
