Description
What is a Volunteer Conservation Assistant?
As part of the tercentenary celebrations of the life and work of renowned architect, Sir Christopher Wren, Cliveden Conservation Workshop are offering a free programme of 5 conservation workshops in the following elements: Metal, Glass, Stone, Wood, Plaster/Paint - plus a programme of digital building and object surveying in conjunction with Terra Measurements.
The programme is designed to raise awareness of both the significance of Wren - and his connection to the building of city churches following the Great Fire of London in plus the current and future conservation requirements of his buildings and legacy.
We are looking for individuals to become Wren300 Volunteer Conservation Assistants to support Cliveden Conservation in facilitating these workshops in a safe, proactive, and constructive way.
What's involved?
Conservation Assistants will be on hand to help Cliveden Conservation in the setting up and smooth running of the workshops at a City of London church.
All this takes organisation and setting up/ taking down, and volunteers will be essential to the smooth running and engagement of those attending.
Cliveden Conservation will lead the sessions, but you will assist them with setting up/taking down, interaction, health and safety considerations, ushering attendees, 'hands-on' workshop activities and answering questions.
What's in it for you?
- Personal satisfaction of helping participants to get the most out of their visit.
- Meeting new people and working as part of a small and friendly team.
- Make the most of your existing skills and perhaps learn some new ones.
- The opportunity to observe and learn from an awardwinning conservation company.
- If conservation is a career you would like to explore, this could be a good way to demonstrate your commitment and determine if it is right for you.
- Being a part of the momentous national celebration of Sir Christopher Wren and Wren 300 project activities.
Experience and skills
No experience is necessary, but it is important that you are comfortable and enjoy working with people. You should be enthusiastic, easy going, and be able to work as part of a team. The ability to be on your feet for most of the day is essential. An interest in historic building conservation is also helpful but not essential.
Timing and Commitment
The conservation workshops are held on weekdays throughout April and May 2023. The timings of these events will be from 8am to 5pm. Evening lectures will follow at the same venue during the workshop weeks. However, this commitment does not have to be every week. We are happy for you to get involved as and when you can.
Training and Expenses
Conservation Volunteers will be invited to join a training session (dates to be confirmed) so that they can be familiarised with the programme, structure of the day, activities, and the church venue.
