Based at HM Coroner's Offices and Court, Civic Centre, Bourne Avenue, Bournemouth BH1 6DY.


HM Coroner for Dorset investigates the circumstances of all deaths where there is reason to suspect that the cause of death is unknown, is violent or unnatural, or occurred whilst the deceased was in lawful custody.


BCP Council is seeking to appoint a Coroners Court Usher to support the Coroner Inquest Hearings sitting in determining the cause of death on reportable deaths investigated by the Coroner.

Acting under guidance within the scope of Coronial law, including the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, the Coroners (Investigation) Regulations 2013 and the Coroners (Inquests) Rules 2013 and other statutory provision, your duties will include:

  • Setting up of the court including all associated audio/visual equipment required for remote participation and recording of proceedings
  • Meeting and greeting of all court users entering the courts
  • Announcing the arrival and departure of the Coroner sitting
  • Guiding and directing each witness with the taking of the oath
  • Providing directions to all court users and ushering them from room to room during adjournments
  • Providing support to the Coroner during the inquest hearing including conveyance and securing of court bundle and legal documentation as and when required
  • Sitting in court for the duration of the inquest hearing and ensuring that all hearings in the Coroner Court run smoothly and are legally compliant
  • Undertaking a number of administrative tasks associated with court bundle preparation, processing of invoices and expenses (for jurors) and any other tasks deemed commensurate with the level of the role.


You will work Monday to Friday around the hours of 08:00 to 16:00 hours with occasional overtime required where courts run over.

Overtime can be taken as TOIL or paid as overtime with agreement by your line manager.


You will have a strong customer service background having various levels of experience when dealing with diverse groups of the community.


You will have strong and effective communication skills and able to carry out a professional and empathic family liaison function whilst the inquest hearing is in progress.


You will be required to work flexibly and collaboratively with other Coroners Court Ushers and Coroners Officers covering all court locations to maintain business continuity and team resilience.

A full DBS vetting check will be required for this post.
