Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study right at the heart of the city, and we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Pre-sessional Teaching Fellow to join us on a fixed-term contract.

The role will suit someone with substantial experience of teaching on pre-sessional courses and/or similar intensive, high-stakes English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses.


ABOUT THE ROLE:


Working with diverse groups of learners, you will be responsible for developing their English proficiency and academic skills with the aims of helping them meet the entry requirements of their degree courses and equipping them with the skills necessary to succeed on those courses.


MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Planning, preparation and delivery of onetoone tutorials, small groups classes and lectures.
  • Use appropriate learning, teaching, support, and assessment methods and provide feedback to students.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of engaging learning materials that meet the current needs of learners.
  • Motivate students, raise aspirations, increase their confidence, and challenge and support them in their academic study.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, learning/teaching, and student progress.
  • Conducting summative and formative assessments, as well as proficiency tests, which may take place overseas.
  • Working flexibly to support the needs of the International Office.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS:


  • Significant experience of working on presessional/similar English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses teaching international students.
  • Significant experience of teaching online and developing materials for online learning.
  • Experience of assessing students according to the Common European Framework for Languages or similar criteria.
  • A teaching qualification and/or teaching experience in a Secondary, Further Education or Higher Education context.
  • A strong proactive and collaborative outlook.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong IT skills.
  • The ability and willingness to travel overseas as required.
  • AFHEA status or the ability to achieve this within a year.
  • A supportive, positive, and nonjudgemental attitude.
