Role Purpose:


To write profitable business in line with the underwriting plan, using professional judgement to achieve the target premium revenue, return on premium and business growth whilst operating in line with the Underwriting Manual and general compliance/regulatory and Company procedures.

To manage underwriting risk exposures through aggregate limits and reinsurance, examine departmental practices and procedures with a view to delivering efficiencies and provide support to CUO including updating and regular maintenance of the underwriting manual.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Fully understand the risk and seek further clarity as required.
  • Underwrite profitable business in accordance with business plans.
  • Adhere to all Starr underwriting standards as outlined in the Underwriting Manual.
  • Obtain signoff for all business that is in excess of agreed authority levels or where any factor falls below rating guidelines.
  • Adhere to rating tools and guidelines. Ensure that underwriting documentation, both paper and electronic, is accurate, complete, uptodate and meet Starr and Lloyd's standards.
  • Ensure that the policy wordings and clauses are slip referenced and agreed.
  • Ensure that all accounts are contract certain at the time of binding.
  • Develop broker relationships and optimise opportunities on renewals and new business.
  • Explore client and company knowledge to identify and optimise crossselling opportunities.
  • Conduct Quality Assurance (QA) within Starr guidelines.
  • Conduct Peer Reviews against Starr guidelines.
  • Work with the credit control team on aged debt in line with Starr/Financial Lines procedures.
  • Enter schedule data and quotations accurately into the system.
  • Ensure that the Underwriting Notes are complete.
  • Log all bound, quoted, working and declined risks into the business log immediately.
  • Ensure that the file is complete and contains all relevant documents. Obtain any outstanding items from the broker or underwriter in readiness for Peer Review.
  • Ensure that signings are accurate and are consistent with written confirmations.
  • Liaise with brokers to follow up on outstanding renewals.
  • Follow up on outstanding quotes with the relevant broker.
  • Provide technical training to newly joining or less experienced members of the team.
  • Delegate tasks for development purposes and provide appropriate support and supervision.
  • Ensure necessary resources and skills to undertake all allocated tasks.
  • Identify and communicate training or resource gaps to management.
  • Promote team working and develop a strong team with a clear culture and identity.
  • Ensure that all accounts are contract certain.
  • Work with the Head of D&O and Senior Underwriters on D&O strategies and initiatives.

Experience:


  • Good knowledge of D&O, PTL, EPL and Crime.
  • Experience as a Assistant Underwriter or junior Underwriter within the class of business.
  • Experience of Lloyd's and London Market processing procedures for premiums and claims.
  • Knowledge of Pricing/Rating tools.
