The post holder will support the Director of Midwifery and Women's Services in developing and delivering a strategic approach to Midwifery that meets the needs of local population with a specific focus on the deprivation, diversity, and inclusion agenda.


The post holder will also support the Director of Midwifery in the professional leadership, development and management of midwifery and nursing within the Women's Directorate to facilitate the delivery of excellent midwifery and nursing practice that is evidence based and measurable.

The post holder will be responsible for the management and quality of patient care delivered in respect of choice and personalisation.


The post is part of the senior management team within Women's and Children's division that would play a key role in ensuring high quality maternity services that meets national requirements.

This is to ensure the service can withstand external scrutiny with a clear plan to support compliance with national recommendations that is sustainable.


The post holder will support the divisional Triumvirate in developing, reviewing, and monitoring departmental action plans that supports compliance with the recommendation, Immediate and Essential actions from the final Ockenden report as well as a robust process of compliance with CNST standards and CQC.


There are many exciting transformational plans at West Hertfordshire which means that it is a great time to join the service and develop further skills and knowledge in both strategic and operational management of maternity services, in partnership with East of England LMNS and this includes exciting plans to roll out a new digital maternity system.


This is also in close collaboration with ICS, to develop our maternal medicine pathways in support of managing complex pregnancies.


There are also exciting discussions to review new nursing and midwifery roles within the service, which means that the role will provide an excellent autonomy to transform the workforce in support of ensuring employment of staff with the right skills at the right time at the right place.

Maternity services provide community services across three sites and there is an expectation to work cross site.


There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Major redevelopment works are due for completion by 2025 or soon after.

These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.

The Head of Midwifery role is a key position within the Divisional Management Team, responsible to the Director of Midwifery with a prime focus on the day-to-day delivery of high standards of patient care across integrated care pathways and services.


The purpose of the role is to provide operational midwifery leadership across the women's service to ensure and consistently develop high quality efficient service provision for all women accessing maternity & Gynaecology care at West Hertfordshire Hospital.


Reporting to the Director of Midwifery, the post holder will develop, maintain, and provide assurance on clinical and operational governance systems and processes, specifically clinical risk management, CQC standards, clinical policy and procedure, clinical quality, health and safety, patient experience, complaint systems and resolution, incident reporting and resolution, contractual quality measures, safeguarding.


The post holder will assist the Director of Midwifery and Gynaecology, Clinical Director, Clinical Directors - Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Divisional Manager to ensure that divisional and corporate objectives in relation to the workforce, service delivery, quality improvement, clinical quality, safety and leadership elements of the service are carried out.


Deputise for the Director of Midwifery as required and take a lead role in supporting the Director of Midwifery to include effective resource management and strategic planning for the future of the service.


Ensure women and their families are at the centre of care, implementing necessary service improvements to ensure maternity care provision is responsive to women's needs and care is of the highest standards.


Have a strong focus on improving women's experience of maternity services; lead in the management of complaints and women's experiences, including changing practice from lessons learnt.


Develop and maintain key working relationships with senior nursing staff within other departments and to encourage the development of a corporate approach towards the development of the nursing and midwifery service where applicable.
