Summary of position and the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability
The RHN is an independent hospital and medical charity.

We care for people who have brain injuries and require assessment and intensive rehabilitation for conditions such as Huntington's disease and prolonged disorders of consciousness.

Our specialist servicesinclude a ventilator unit and a neuro-behavioural unit.


We help those with the most complex of health needs and disabilities including degenerative or progressive conditions as well as providing palliative care.

The patients we support usually have complex physical challenges alongside their neuro-disability.

We are looking for a Speech and Language Technical Instructor to join our team at The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability.

This role involves working across a range of specialist units including the Brain Injury Service, Neuro-behavioural RehabilitationUnit, Ventilator Unit, Specialist Nursing Home and Huntington's Disease Unit.

You will act as support practitioner to the speech and language therapy service as part of an interdisciplinary team.

You will be required to prepare and administer therapeutic programmesfor communication and swallowing difficulties under the direction of qualified Speech and Language Therapists.

You will also provide support during the weekly FEES clinic.


This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is interested in a career in speech and language therapy to gain some clinical experience in adult neuro-rehabilitation and palliative care.


Main Objectives of the role

  • Demonstrate an awareness of RHN's objectives and contribute to achieving them appropriately.
  • Strive to improve efficiency in all areas of your work.
  • To provide a flexible speech and language therapy support service for both individual patients and groups within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • To be responsible for organising and running therapeutic individual sessions and groups with a designated caseload of patients using specific technical knowledge/skill, modifying and adapting therapeutic programmes, according to patient need and agreedaims, with support and liaison from the prescribing SLT.
  • To communicate complex information related to treatment programmes and to provide timely feedback to the SLT.
  • To assist SLTs in organising and running training sessions and administration for courses.
  • To demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice with peers and supervisors, to maintain own knowledge base and to identify own areas for development.
  • To undertake administrative responsibilities appropriate to the needs of the service.

Key Responsibilities

  • To use acquired speech and language therapy skills and techniques in management of communication and swallowing impairments to provide effective intervention as directed by a qualified SLT.
  • To carry out therapy programmes as prescribed by the treating SLT
  • To maintain appropriate, accurate and up to date patient records in line with policies and standards in both written and electronic format.
  • To record in patient's records, patient's progress in accordance with the specific aims and objectives outlined by the SLT.
  • To carry out specified informal assessments e.g. behaviour observation checklists without supervision and to discuss findings with the SLT.
  • To set up and support SLTs during the weekly FEES clinic.
  • To monitor continually and evaluate changes in the client's responses, and feedback relevant information to the therapist as required.
  • To discuss progress of programmes with treating SLT according to outcomes of sessions.
  • To adapt, modify and deliver Technical Instructor therapy programmes for patients in conjunction with the designated SLTs according to agreed aims, with regular liaison with an SLT.
  • To work collaboratively with SLTs in an effort to meet agreed clinical objectives and patient goals.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:


Essential:


  • Formal Qualifications to degree level or equivalent
  • Basic understanding of speech and language therapy profession
  • Basic understanding of communication difficulties in brain injury and stroke and the impact upon the patient.
  • Experience of working with adults with a disability either in health, social or educational setting.
  • Excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to cope effectively in difficult situations
