Job summary:

Building a strong Commercial Function in Government, and with it the right commercial capability, is at the heart of a far-reaching programme of Civil Service reform.

We are building a cadre of commercial talent in all Government departments; people who can manage our commercial portfolios, who can lead our most complex and novel programmes and projects, people who have the gravitas and depth of experience to work alongside our policy and operational leaders to develop innovative commercial arrangements, whether through joint ventures, outsourcing or best-in-class contracts.

We have already made significant progress through the establishment of the Government Commercial Organisation (GCO), our single employer of senior commercial talent across government.

This role will sit within the GCO, but based in our UK Export Finance commercial team delivering departmental objectives.

Job description:

Thank you for taking the time to find out about this exciting role that will occupy a key position within the UK Export Finance (UKEF) new commercial function.

UKEF is the UK's export credit agency and a government department strategically and operationally aligned with the Department for International Trade.

Founded in 1919 as the world's first export credit agency, we have been innovating since day one, and now have over 100 years' track record supporting UK exports.

UKEF is at the heart of the Export Strategy, which sets out Government's support offer to help British businesses succeed in an overseas marketplace, driving sustainable growth and prosperity in the UK and abroad.

UKEF's offer is a critical part of the Government's plan to support UK exporters in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and by working with partners throughout Government, including the Department for International Trade, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, we can play our part in supporting the UK's trade aspirations.

We work with organisations of all sizes, be it small businesses looking to make their first moves abroad or huge multinationals in need of extra financing.

Forget what you think you might know about the civil service; we like to think of ourselves as the UK's bank - with a firm commercial focus and huge ambitions.

In we provided £7.4 billion worth of support for exports to nearly 100 countries.

UKEF commercial activities are currently delivered by Department for International Trade, but with significant year on year growth across our business and dedicated commitment to improve our customer experience and enhance our product range UKEF has taken the decision to stand up its own commercial function from 1st April 2023.

This function will have a clear mandate to develop and execute a strong commercial strategy to support UKEF achieve its strategic ambitions set out in the 2024 business plan.

This new function offers a fantastic opportunity for commercial professionals to be involved right at the beginning and shape our future success.

The chance to build a new commercial function from the ground up is rare and requires individuals who have an entrepreneurial mind-set.

We are looking for people who are eager to work in this new and dynamic environment, have the gravitas and depth of experience to work alongside senior business owners to develop and deliver the best commercial outcomes for UKEF.

I am excited to be setting up this new commercial function at a time when UKEF is so key to driving sustainable growth both in the UK and abroad.

Our pipeline of business shows we can make a real difference in countries across the world as we support projects to build local infrastructure, such as transport networks and hospitals, as well as create jobs in these industries.

This is an exciting time to join UKEF, and if you are successful, you will play a key part in supporting the UK's international trade goals and objectives.

Person specification:

This high-profile role within the UKEF Commercial team will provide the opportunity to make a real difference and help shape how this newly formed commercial function will deliver an exceptional commercial service for UKEF.

You will help set the vision and culture to build and create a commercial reputation, highly regarded both within UKEF and within the GCO.
