Essential Qualities / Skills:
―Maths and English GCSE Grade 4/C or equivalent (Level 2)

―Level 4 counsellor qualification or above

―To be registered with BACP or equivalent accrediting body


Essential Qualities / Skills:
―Experience of working as a counsellor with young people aged 14-19.

―Experience of working with clients who are having/have experienced loss.

―Experience of working with children and young people experiencing challenges with their mental health.

―Knowledge of BACP ethical guidelines

―An understanding of how counselling can be used to fit the various needs of different clients.

―Experience in Play Therapy or alternative methods suitable for younger children.

―Knowledge and understanding of the issues families face with relation to emotional wellbeing and experiences of poverty, youth violence and special educational needs


Desirable Qualities / Skills:
―Knowledge and understanding of trauma and trauma-informed practice.

―Excellent verbal, written and IT skills, including basic word processing, and inputting information for monitoring and evaluation purposes.

―Self-awareness and willingness to engage in reflective practice, supervision and ongoing CPD

―Strong time management, prioritisation skills, and excellent attention to details.


Counsellor's responsibilities:
―To provide an independent and confidential counselling service to students, through individual sessions, responding to their personal, social, emotional or educational concerns;
―To promote a caring and supportive environment where such concerns may be explored, thereby promoting the mental and emotional health at BCT;
―To use available time at the beginning and end of the academic year to run drop in workshops on current trends within BCT;
―To uphold good practice as described by the BACP ethical guidelines.

―To make referrals, where appropriate and with the pupil's consent, to other agencies;
―To maintain appropriate records, including keeping the BCT counselling tracker up to date and to keep all documents, paper or electronic, secure as per GDPR guidelines;
―To be alert to trends and patterns of problems and to be willing to identify causes and recommend corrective action; ―To maintain a high level of knowledge and awareness of changes and developments in the fields of counselling and education and their impact on the delivery of counselling

Salary and Days of Work

―20 hours across 3.5 days a week for 36 weeks per year (
term-time only)

―Pro-rata of annual salary £31, actual salary
£13,451.47)

―This is a permanent position

―Start Date ASAP

We welcome industry professional applicants who wish enter teaching via the full teaching qualification funded by the Taking Teaching Further scheme.

This allows 6 months of reduced timetable for training whilst receiving full pay and cover.
