Job Purpose:

You will form a vital part of the Operating Department team, delivering exceptional and compassionate care to patients in The Winchester Clinic.

Work within a team of Healthcare Professionals including surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre nurses and operating department practitioners to deliver a safe and exceptional experience for patients undergoing day case surgery.

Support the theatre lead and head of clinical services with clinical governance and risk management ensuring it is embedded within daily practice and promote evidence-based practice.


Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1.

Maintain a patient focused quality approach to deliver a consistently high standard of patient care utilising evidence-based practice. 2.

To assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care within scope of practice, taking into consideration the differing needs of sedation, anaesthesia, surgery and recovery.

Prepare equipment and instruments according to the individual needs of the patient, anaethetist and surgeon.

Ensure all equipment is checked prior to use and any faults are reported immediately to the theatre lead or deputy.

Work flexibly across the specialties in all areas of the theatre suite, sharing knowledge and information to support colleagues to promote a cohesive team ethos.


  • Participate in governance activities such as audit. Reporting and documenting clinical and non-clinical incidents to a senior staff member on the incident reporting system to ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors. This includes any safeguarding issues or concerns.
  • To participate in the ordering, safe handling, storage, security and administration of prescribed drugs (including controlled drugs) in accordance with medicines management policies. 7. Help to facilitate the smooth running of operating lists, liaising with other practitioners to support the needs of patients and clinicians.


This may involve moving patients from the operating theatre to the recovery areas employing safe manual handling techniques and equipment.

Maintain accurate patient observations and records on the electronic patient record and promptly highlighting any discrepancies to the wider surgical team.

9.

You will ensure the Five Steps to Safer Surgery and WHO Surgical Safety checklists are performed at all times. 10. To adhere to Healthshare policies and procedures. This includes ensuring that all Health and Safety, COSHH and infection, prevention and control requirements are met 11.

Appropriately respond to patient emergencies, e.g. CPR, haemorrhage, anaesthetic emergencies 12. Comply with and maintain currency with Healthshare mandatory training schedule, professional training and be active in CPD. 13.

To play an active role in the development of the peri-operative service. Sharing learning and specialist knowledge with other clinical colleagues. Supervise and mentor junior and unqualified colleagues. 14.


To provide appropriate information to patients and their relatives and other health care professionals concerning the patients condition as appropriate.

17. To participate in any out of hours service as and when required 18. Take responsibility for planning self and professional development, identifying personal objectives for discussion at individual performance reviews and appraisals.
