Description

To provide clear visible professional advice to employees within the Trust and moving forward to NWL OH shared services and external clients.

Manage and provide professional leadership to Occupational Health staff and the wider multidisciplinary team within the Occupational Health Department.

To assist the Head of Occupational Health in leading and advancing clinical practice in line with DoH guidelines and legislation.

To provide all aspects of nursing care including consultation, advice, education, testing and immunisations where appropriate and in accordance with patient group directives and departmental protocols

To undertake a comprehensive range of occupational health activities and have responsibility for the:

  • Assessment of employee fitness to work
  • Protection of employee health at work
  • Promotion of employee health at work
  • Support of individuals with disabilities in both gaining and sustaining employment
To be able to deliver evidence based occupational health care to all staff and specialist advice to managers on general and specific aspects of occupational health and safety, employment and disability discrimination legislationin line with national guidelines (including HSE, DH, NMC)

Work will be mainly unsupervised, and the post holder is accountable for his or her own professional actions.


Development of a sound knowledge of the terms and conditions of contracts to which he/she may be allocated is essential as is the establishment of strong working relations with the authorised officers of the customer.


The post requires a post registration qualification in Occupational Health, and specialist knowledge across a range of work procedures and practices, with theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience in carrying out Health Surveillance programmes such as Spirometry.


To plan and organise activities or programmes for their own area, of work; and work with the OH Service Manager on service changes impacting outside their own direct area of activity.

He/she must comply with all CW and OHS policy and inform the Service Manager immediately of any difficulties in undertaking the requirements of the post.

The post holder will be require to cover all sites as and when required

  • Work at an advanced level, practice autonomously as well as within a multidisciplinary team
  • To provide professional leadership, advice, support and guidance to the Occupational Health staff and wider multidisciplinary team. Act as a professional role model and provide strong, facilitative and effective clinical leadership.
  • To assess new clients presenting to Occupational Health whether in person or by written referral and initiate management of case.
  • To assess any employee following a body fluid exposure, undertaking a risk assessment for blood borne viruses and taking appropriate action in accordance with the Department of Health guidelines.
  • To assess individual risk for employees presenting with perceived stress and taking appropriate action.
  • To respond to employee/manager's requests for support/information on the working environment.
  • To provide support to employees through potentially difficult or distressing situations.
  • To maintain appropriate records in line with departmental protocols on record keeping
  • To provide health surveillance in accordance with current legislation.
  • To provide positive, professional, accountable leadership to ensure the advancement of nursing practice and the role of Occupational Health within the Trust.
  • To take a senior role in the development and provision
