Are you passionate about our inland waterways and the outdoors?

We are looking for someone who is proactive, a communicator with sound practical skills and good level of fitness to join our small team on the Basingstoke Canal.

Crossing the Hampshire and Surrey Borders, the 32-mile Basingstoke Canal is a designated SSSI and highly used recreational resource. With 29 Locks and numerous bridges, structures and embankments, the 200-year-old, tree lined waterway demands constant attention.

You will be at the forefront of this joining a small team to assist in managing boating, recreation, asset safety, and water levels.

As part of learning to become a Lock keeper, you will also have the opportunity to develop and widen your range of site management and waterway-based skills on a distinctly 'different' countryside and heritage site.

In order to assist the right person, we will offer extensive in-house training to undertake the basics of the role and fund formal training providing you with industry recognised qualifications, such as;

Boat handling
Working at height
First Aid at work
Maintenance and use of Strimmers and Brushcutters.
Maintenance and use of a Chainsaw including the felling of small trees
Basic Tree Inspection
Pedestrian and ride on mowers and Brushcutters

All uniform and personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided, including specialist PPE in order to undertake training.

The post holder will be required to work weekends and bank holidays on a rota basis for which they will receive additional payments.
