Description

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the theatres specialising in the Urology; Ear, Nose and Throat and Maxillofacial specialities within main and day surgery theatres.


Scope of the role:


  • To provide clinical leadership to a designated team and ensure the provision of highquality nursing care to patients and families.
  • To work with the senior divisional structure including Matron and Head of Nursing to promote daily visible leadership and guidance for departmental teams
  • To work with team leader colleagues to facilitate the development of the all staff across the department
  • To provide an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidencebased practice
  • The post holder will be expected to work a working week which fits the service delivery whilst maintaining a visible presence in a leadership role and may be expected to take part in the rostered weekend duties being flexible in their shift patterns
  • There will be an expectation to coordinate shifts and have a wider picture understanding of the department
Key working relationships


Internal:


  • To work alongside the theatre multidisciplinary team in a professional capacity.
  • To work alongside other teams within the wider trust.
  • To communicate with patients and their families/ carers.

External:


  • To liaise with medical company representatives.
  • To liaise with hospitals and their associated teams/departments external to HUH.


The post holder will be responsible for providing skilled clinical and technical assistance as a member of the theatre team and to participate in the assessment of patient care needs and to implement and maintain the agreed standard of care.

It is expected that the post holder will be able to carry out all of the duties listed in the main duty section below.

No duties are to be undertaken by the post holder unless they have received the appropriate training. The post holder will work according to the NMC Code of Conduct and other professional guidelines


The post holder will also carry overall responsibility for the organisation and management of the operating theatre, including the supervision of students.

Main duties and responsibilities


Clinical:


  • To be a highly competent, knowledgeable, and visible practitioner within the specialty ensuring the provision of excellent, evidencebased nursing care for patients and their families.
  • Maintaining a safe environment by ensuring that equipment is checked, clinical areas are prepared for patients, trust policies are adhered to, faulty equipment is reported, clinical incidents are reported and investigated, and that staff work in a professional manner
  • To ensure the appropriate skill mix for patients to ensure a high and safe standard of care
  • Ensure that each patient is assessed, and that their care is planned, implemented, and evaluated in negotiation with the family, and that this is accurately documented.
  • Liaise with clinical, nonclinical and facilities staff to maintain a safe, friendly, and welcoming environment for the children, families, visitors, and staff.
  • To act as an advocate for the patient and family ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services.
  • To communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers, and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events.
