Description

Applications are invited for a three-month postdoctoral research fellow (May-July 2023), working with Chris Sandom in the School of Life Sciences, on a project to establish a South Coast Sustainability Research Hub to catalyse the development of sustainableland use systems along England's South Coast.

This is a transdisciplinary project, supported by the Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (SSRP), which directly brings together expertise in local food systems from Vic Borrill (Brighton and Hove Food Partnership),sustainable land management from Richard Goring (Wiston Estate); environmental law from Bonnie Holligan (LPS/Sussex); circular food systems from Shova Thapa Karki (SPRU/Sussex); geography and food systems from Pedram Rowhani (Global Studies/Sussex); and sustainabledevelopment and livelihood systems from John Thompson (IDS).

The duties are to:

  • Carry out exploratory interviews with key informants and organisations to discuss establishing the regional research hub with Sussex & Brighton University academics, and regional landowners/managers, NGOs, government bodies and businesses.
  • Implement a high-level regional situation analysis of land use systems by reviewing relevant literature and conducting a GIS analysis.
  • Organise a South Coast Sustainable Land Use Systems workshop, with support from the Project Team, to agree a common purpose and commitment statement, to develop a plan of action and fund raising, and to formally establish the research partnership with stakeholders.
  • Help produce 1) a concept note to help secure additional funding, and 2) a policy briefing note based on the situation analysis and workshop discussions.

This job would particularly suit a finishing PhD student, or a postdoc at the end of a contract who is seeking a bridging post.

Experience with running workshops and using GIS are desirable. We are looking for the applicant to start by May 1st or as soon aspossible.
