MAIN DUTIES CLINICAL To be responsible for assessing and reviewing patients on the designated in-patient wards who require nutritional plans to support their care.

To work as part of the MDT on the designated wards to support patients nutritional care by attending the board and MDT meetings and family meetings as required.

To support the staff working on the designated wards to ensure patients nutritional plans are carried out effectively.

To carry out the nutritional assessment and make appropriate dietary recommendations for the management of a variety of conditions for patients and carers in the general dietetic clinic outpatient setting.

To deliver the dietetic guidance for health education groups such as ante-natal and cardiac rehabilitation.

To be responsible for assessing and monitoring patient enteral feeding practices on the wards and be competent to directly prescribe nutritional supplements and feeds.

To be responsible for organising the discharge of patients on home enteral feeding regimens.

This includes prescribing feeds, educating patients and carers on home feeding regimens and equipment, liaising with the community nursing medical and dietetic teams and the companies providing feeds into the community.

To undertake training and be deemed competent in the use of all equipment related to nutritional assessment e.g. anthropometrics.

To be competent in the use of information technology with particular reference to nutritional packages for assessment of patients nutritional requirements and dietary adequacy.

EDUCATION AND RESEARCH To provide nutrition teaching sessions to other members of the multidisciplinary team including allied health professionals, nursing, medical and catering staff.


To give lectures to university students externally when develop evidence based resources and literature as required supporting the clinical nutrition service, including displays around the hospital, and information for staff and patients.

To help develop, implement and monitor service standards/guidelines and procedures. To be involved in the ongoing development of multidisciplinary rehabilitation groups. To be able to develop and use communication and teaching skills to educate the diverse and multicultural population.


To undertake surveys, audits and research projects approved by the department audit lead and Clinical Lead Dietitian that will enhance patient care.

ORGANISATION To provide absence cover as agreed by the department manager. This may include covering specialist areas such as nutrition support, gastroenterology and diabetes. To ensure all documentation (written and electronic) is accurate and complete in line with departmental and ICO policies.


To document dietetic assessments, reviews and interventions clearly within the electronic medical notes as per department guidelines and to summarise dietetic care and recommendations on the electronic discharge summary.

To keep statistics in accordance with departmental requirements.

To abide by all departmental and ICO policies and procedures as necessary and to work within the professional code of conduct.

To undertake any other duties commensurate with the post as requested by the Clinical Lead Dietitian.

COMMUNICATION To advise the Catering Department regarding special dietary requirements of some patients. To establish good working relationships with multidisciplinary teams in all areas of work and attend multidisciplinary team meetings. To deal with sensitive issues regarding patients, through reassurance and clear explanation.

To communicate effectively with patients and carers, motivating patients and providing clear explanation, to ensure adequate understanding of the condition and treatment required.


Barriers to understanding such as loss of hearing, altered perception, fear and pain may be evident and must be addressed.

PROFESSIONAL To ensure practice is evidence based, by keeping up to date with new research literature, resources and clinical practices.

To work as part of the Nutrition and Dietetics Team, towards new developments, attending and participating in relevant staff meetings and CPD meetings.

To participate in staff appraisal and work towards agreed objectives set at the annual appraisal.
