Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study right in the heart of the city and we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Research Administrator in the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences, which is the largest faculty within the university.

The role will suit an experienced administrator looking to advance their career and build experience in the field of research, innovation and enterprise.


You will be responsible for day to day administration related to research and enterprise activity including co-ordinating and taking minutes at meetings, helping develop Moodle and Teams communication sites for internal team use, administration around our growing portfolio of enterprise and research projects as well as planning logistics for our staff development workshops.


As part of the role you will:

  • Play a lead role in the organisation of meetings, project and finance monitoring.
  • Be required to generate and monitor purchase orders and liaise with suppliers.
  • Be an effective communicator to academics and internal stakeholders within the university regarding research and enterprise developments and events.
  • Assist the Associate Dean Research Innovation and Enterprise in handling logístical implementation of the Faculty's Research, Innovation and Enterprise strategy.
  • Liaise with stakeholders internal and external to the university to ensure smooth functioning of enterprise and research activity in the Faculty.
  • Coordinate events and staff development workshops in the Faculty related to the Research, Innovation and Enterprise Portfolio.
  • Ensure events external to BCU are booked taking into consideration cost, quality, facilities and wider consideration of value for money.
  • Liaise with Procurement, Finance and Contracts Team to ensure any procurement for events are efficiently approved and signed off via the BCU approvals process.
  • Prepare reports and documentation prior to and after events to maintain and ongoing record and demonstrate the overall portfolio, filtered by such factors such as internal, external and where directly linked to projects.

You will have:

  • A degree or equivalent experience which demonstrates comparable skills and ability to:
  • Make decisions and solve problems.
  • Assemble, evaluate and analyse information.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Adopt a proactive and selfmanaging work style.
  • A high level of literacy and numeracy.
  • Excellent IT skills including advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software packages, preferably Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience of arranging events.
  • Experience of effectively managing electronic and paper based filing and information systems.
  • Experience of servicing committees is also desirable.
  • Experience of working in a higher education environment may be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Excellent team working skills with the ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with colleagues.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with an articulate, confident and diplomatic approach to communications and tact and discretion when dealing with sensitive issues.
  • Ability to assimilate written and verbal communication quickly and produce accurate, timely minutes and records of agreed objectives and actions for follow up.
  • Excellent attention to detail, including proof reading skills, with the ability to maintain a high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and manage competing priorities on own initiative.
