TheSupported Return to Training(SuppoRTT) programme is a nationally led programme which is aimed at ensuring the smooth transition of trainees back into clinical practice after a period out of training.

Well supported and engaged trainees are more likely to remain in clinical practice as a result.


This role will continue to develop the SuppoRTT framework in GWH for returning trainees and work in partnership with Health Education England.


This Support post offers emerging clinicians across healthcare the opportunity to develop their skills in leadership, management, strategy and project management outside of their normal clinical practice.

The Post Graduate Medical Education team aim to promote trainee well-being and personal development. They provide support and assistance in tackling obstacles or key transitions, whether they are professional or personal. Training as a junior doctor can be stressful and demanding, impacting on both work and personal life. We aim to provide support through our local SuppoRTT Champion and pastoral leads. We feel this to be a crucial element to training within an ever more challenging work environment.

  • Promote SuppoRTT and wellbeing amongst Trainees at GWH.
  • Support trainees who are returning to work after a period of absence.
  • In conjunction with the SuppoRTT Champion work on a number of initiatives which will enhance the smooth transition of returning to work after a period out of medicine.
  • Take the lead and continued development of existing SuppoRTT projects within GWH.
  • Provide practical 'on the job' support to foundation Doctors in training and other doctors.
  • Provide support to International Medical Graduates (IMG's), who are new to the NHS and new to the Trust. This work will be supported by the IMG consultant Lead.
  • Work closely with local SuppoRTT Consultants in promoting a number of initiatives to enhance the health and well-being of junior doctors within GWH.

Engage within one or more of these initiatives:

coaching and mentoring including peer-mentoring programmes; resilience; work-life balance; awareness and engagement with region-wide and national support programmes; processes and systems to deliver support including database, evaluation tools and communication systems.


  • Attend and give presentations at regional/ national conferences, as well as publishing their work.
  • Flexibility will be given to the SuppoRTT project depending on the interests and experience of the individual post holder

Patient Care

  • The successful post-holder will spend 2.5 days (0.5 WTE) within the Postgraduate Medical Education Team at GWH. The remaining sessions, 2.5 days (0.5 WTE) will be spent working clinical in the Acute Medical Unit.
  • Take a history and examine patients.
  • Identify and synthesise problems.
  • Prescribe safely.
  • Keep accurate and relevant medical records.
  • Complete discharge summaries in a timely fashion and be responsible for the prescribing of discharge medication.
  • Manage time and clinical priorities effectively.
  • Take part in relevant clinical procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues.
  • Use evidenced based guidelines and audit to benefit of patient care.
