Main duties of the job:


During your apprentice programme, you will work within a team of Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants providing a service to the Chase farm hospital and other service level agreement areas.


You will be rotating through the following areas:

  • Inpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy
- where you will be labelling and dispensing medicines for patients, preparing medicine for delivery to wards and ensuring medication reaches the correct patient within target times.

  • You will also safely return or destroy medications no longer required.
  • You will handle and deal appropriately with enquires, via telephone or hatch, regarding the collection of prescriptions locating them by using Prescription tracking system.
  • Stores and distribution
- where you will receive Pharmacy stock accurately into the department ensuring medication delivered matches orders,

  • Ensure stock is handled and stored correctly.
  • Check on availability of stock and support the ordering process for obtaining medicines.
  • Order and maintain ward stock and assemble stock medicine deliveries for wards and departments

The Pharmacy Service comprises of Inpatient and Outpatient dispensary services, ward based clinical pharmacy services, Medicines Information, aseptic and non-sterile production services, pharmacy stores & distribution, procurement, and homecare services.

We cover a range of clinical specialties including HIV, general medicine, emergency services, surgery, rheumatology, hepatology, anti-coagulation, oncology & haematology, women's health, paediatrics and infection control.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

To undertake an 18 month development programme in Pharmacy through work based learning and by participating in regular training sessions.

Supervision and support will be provided during all tasks, enabling the apprentice to work within the organisation to gain experience, confidence and to deliver effective and safe patient focused support, to the
designated team.

This training opportunity will lead to a substantive position within the Trust on completion of their apprenticeship.

Successfully completing the training programme will lead to a Pharmacy Services Assistant Apprenticeship qualification via distance learning and on the job training.


  • Pharmacy Support Worker Apprentices are appointed for a contracted period of 18 months during which time they participate in the general work of the hospital pharmacy service as a full team member in each section.
  • Learn, under the guidance, direction, control or supervision of registered Pharmacists, qualified Pharmacy Technicians and other staff to practice the skills of a Pharmacy Support Worker.
  • Undertake a course of study and assessment in preparation for Pharmacy Services Assistant Apprenticeship qualification with Buttercups Training
  • Alongside onthejob training, apprentices spend at a minimum of 6 hours per week of their working hours completing classroombased learning. Some study may be required outside of workings hours e.g. completion of college assignments, evidence etc.
  • This is a site specific rotational post through Procurement (RF site only), In Patients, Out Patients (BH site only) and Distribution services. Please note that rotations will be dependent on what site you are based in.
