Overall Purpose of the Job


We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Technical Specialist (Computational Facilities) to join our dynamic technical operations team, which strives to provide a sector leading technical support for FSE and the wider University.

With a commitment to customer service excellence and a passion for science and engineering, Technical Specialist (Computational Facilities) will provide an agile technical support service to staff and students to support teaching, research and professional services.

FSE's research and teaching quality is recognised globally; this is an exciting opportunity to join us in Manchester and contribute to the provision of a sector leading technical service.


Key aspects of this role will include:

  • Overseeing the operation, compliance, and maintenance of dedicated computational facility rooms and lab spaces, including fire, electrical, and mechanical compliance, housekeeping, and cable management
  • Creating and maintaining inventories of computational systems, identifying colleagues responsible for upkeep of system software and hardware, and ensuring warranty and replacement plans are in place
  • Liaising with colleagues in Estates and Facilities and the FSE Technical Services I&F team where needed to ensure AHUs, chillers, power, lighting, and other facilities in computational facility rooms are maintained, upgraded, or replaced as required
  • Liaising with colleagues in IT Services and Research IT to support the needs of computational facility room users
  • Provide advice and support for server hardware deployment in compute facility rooms and work with users to establish compute requirements and signpost to existing facilities where appropriate
