Consultant Haematopathologist (One WTE post for 11PAs) for the Haemato-oncology Diagnostic Service (HODS)


Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and forward thinking Histopathologist, with specialist expertise/interest in Haematopathology and ideally within five years of completion of training/CCT/CCT equivalent, to join our team of consultants with potential opportunities for management roles within the team, research and teaching.

The posts would suit either a first-time consultant or an early-stage consultant Histopathologist wishing to relocate.


The Haemato-oncology Diagnostic Service for the Merseyside & Cheshire Cancer Network (MCCN) is the only NICE IOG 2016 (NG 47) peer review compliant service in the NW of England and is a state-of art dynamic facility with a national profile.

Job duties

This is a dynamic service and is at the cutting edge of science in the specialty. You will be supported by a well-established, experienced, collegiate and friendly specialist reporting team.

For a first-time consultant, support to develop skills in specialist haematopathology will be provided by the team for a period of 12-18 months.


The appointees, in collaboration with the other Consultants will be expected to fulfil the duties detailed in Job description which can be found in our job pack, attached in the supporting documents.

The ability to work as part of a team in a collegiate manner is a key requirement.

Job responsibilities

To provide a comprehensive Haematopathology diagnostic service, including full clinical liaison, to:

  • Clinicians in the Cheshire & Merseyside Cancer Network
  • Carry out multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT)
  • Address any daytoday clinical queries, in conjunction with colleagues
  • Work seamlessly between different areas of the unit, such as, Immunophenotyping, Haematopathology and Molecular Genetics
To take a lead role in management in dedicated areas within the team.

To develop innovative ways of working to meet the increasing demands of clinical users.

To be involved in the training of Specialty Trainees, scientific and BMS staff.

To work to the team rota and give reciprocal cover for periods of leave between team members.

To work with the Clinical Director on all matters where requested to do so.

To take part in Medical Audit and Quality Control.


To pursue a programme of Continuous Professional and Medical Education/ Development (CME/CPD) with the Royal College of Pathologists and to participate in annual Individual Performance Reviews (IPR) and Consultant appraisals.

To contribute to the requirements of Clinical Governance.

To share in the day-to-day administrative duties associated with the running of a clinical laboratory.
