We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Community Inclusion Advocate to join our team and make a positive impact on the lives of people with a learning disability in East Kent.

East Kent Mencap is a registered charity.

We have been awarded funding from the National Lottery Community Fund for a Community Connector to support people with a learning disability who are struggling with social isolation.

They will work closely with ourGOLD (Getting On with Learning Difficulties), a project for people with a learning disability in Thanet, who do not receive statutory funding or are moving out of the welfare system.

The GOLD project is led by people with a learning disability, supportingthem to have their voices heard and listened to in their local community.


Job Purpose:


This role is a fixed-term opportunity of 3 years and is a role that will develop and change over time as projects evolve.


East Kent Mencap is looking for a committed, enthusiastic individual to join our GOLD project, working with people with learning difficulties to connect them with community groups and organisations in Thanet.

The Community Connector will support and encouragethem to participate in their local community to increase their social network and reduce their isolation.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Advocating for the rights and needs of people with learning disabilities and their families within the community.
  • Supporting people to gain skills and confidence to selfadvocate.
  • Maintaining and growing the GOLD database of over 100 organisations.
  • Providing information and guidance to people with a learning disability and their families
  • Supporting individuals with a learning disability to develop skills that enhance their ability to participate fully in community life, such as communication, decisionmaking, problemsolving and emotional support
  • You will encourage people to increase their confidence and selfesteem, feel less socially isolated, develop skills, become more resilient, and take an active role in their community by getting involved in local projects.
  • You will be a friendly face in a complicated world, and you will make a real difference in the lives of people who may not have any other form of consistent support.
  • Facilitating community events and activities that promote social interaction and inclusion for people with a learning disability.
  • Advocating for accessibility and accommodations in public spaces and services to ensure that people with a learning disability can fully participate in community life.
  • Working collaboratively with other advocates, service providers, and community organisations to promote inclusion, and reduce stigma and discrimination.
  • To increase sustainability, you will support the delivery of additional externally funded projects.
  • You will support people at an early stage of transition as they prepare to leave statutory services
  • Monitoring and evaluating the impact of advocacy efforts on the lives of people with a learning disability and their families.

Person Requirements:


  • Experience of working with individuals with a learning disability
  • A commitment to promoting independence and enabling people to achieve their goals and aspirations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with and without a learning disability
  • Experience in supporting project work
  • Excellent organisational and timemanagement skills
