As
Lead User Researcher your main responsibilities will be

  • Plan, design and prepare a range of user research activities to support the design, development and continuous improvement of our service.
  • Carry out user research activities, from recruiting participants and preparing discussion guides to moderating guidance testing sessions.
  • Analyse and synthesize research data, leading to clear and actionable findings.
  • Work with social researchers, ops, analytical and content colleagues to formulate a rich and full picture of customer behaviour.
  • Coach and mentor more junior members of the team
  • Confidently represent and explain user needs to colleagues and the wider business, including senior leaders.
  • Shape research to deliver at pace.
  • Work closely with user researchers within MOJ/OPG Digital to ensure alignment of work and mutual support.
  • Complete secondary and deskbased research to build understanding of the problem space and existing research.
  • Contribute to the wider user research community, including presenting at catchups, and writing blog posts.
  • Work alongside other teams, such as analytical services, complaints, communications and change management to develop an indepth view of the customer base.
  • Disseminate key findings across the organisation and wider Department/Government, ensuring that the information is widely understood and actionable.

Essential Skills:


  • Ability to travel to Birmingham office
  • Experience of recruiting a range of different users
  • Experience of conducting qualitative, inperson research with members of the public
  • Experience of conducting nondigital research
  • Understanding and experience of using a range of user research methods
  • The ability to understand the problem area, and to design appropriate user research activities to inform decision making
  • Ability to present research findings in compelling and innovative ways, making recommendations based on sound analysis.
  • Understanding and experience of a range of synthesis and analysis methods
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex messages to a range of audiences.
  • Ability to work across all grades and areas across OPG, MoJ and other government depts. and to work to deliver competing priorities

Desirable Skills:


  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of recruiting nondigital users
  • Degree or equivalent experience in Human-Computer Interaction, User Experience Design, Human Factors, User Centred Design, Psychology or related field.
  • Understanding or awareness of the Government Service Standards
  • Relevant experience of working in a research role within Government
  • Experience of qualitative analysis software e.g. NVivo, Dovetail etc.
