Job summary:
UK businesses have faced a series of significant and unprecedented pressures in recent times. Examples include inflation, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and labour shortages. The Business Group Strategy team was set up to respond to these acute economic challenges. We support a diverse mix of business sectors including steel, automotive, aerospace, hospitality, retail, construction, professional services.
The team coordinates responses to complex cross-cutting issues which are impacting a range of businesses.
Recent examples include overseeing management of climate change risks, getting business perspectives on skills shortages, and assessing the impacts of industrial action.
Our areas of work are often departmental priorities and as such can be high profile. The role will entail exposure to the highest levels of government and cross-Whitehall working. The role will be varied, and require being proactive taking an innovative approach to resolving challenges.The team is at the heart of Business Group, in the newly formed Department of Business and Trade.
We are undergoing a period of transition and development, making it an exciting time for new colleagues to join, and shape the direction and culture of the team.
Job description:
- Supporting development of projects in policy areas which affect a broad range of businesses. Examples have included coordinating business inputs into energy support packages, and shaping departmental views on skills policy
- Building relationships across government, to support the team in responding to crosscutting issues facing businesses.
- Rapidly responding to fast moving commissions, such as providing inputs into briefings, ministerial speeches, policy development, and presentations.
- Supporting corporate activity for Business Group, including feeding into the departmental Outcome Delivery Plan, and supporting initiatives to develop the Group's ways of working, mission and vision.
- Managing relationships with sector teams, motivating them to deliver inputs, potentially at short notice.
- Delivering deep dives into these topics, to ensure the team is on the leading edge of developments.
Hybrid Working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.
Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.
Person specification:
Essential Criteria:
- Experience of coordinating strategic projects
- Experience at delivering on competing priorities at pace
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills
You should be a strong communicator, able to adapt your approach to various different audiences. You should be proficient at understanding stakeholder needs and responding to them.
The work is impacted by the current global situation and other issues so is likely to evolve over the coming months.
