An experienced and enthusiastic Senior Bioinformatician is required to join the oesophago-gastric research group at the Department of Oncology, University of Cambridge which is led by Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald.

The Early Cancer Institute is part of the Department of Oncology situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. This recently established institute provides an outstanding environment for cancer research, supporting 8 research groups and ~60 bench scientists.

The Early Cancer Institute's focus is to conduct world-leading research to understand how cancers develop and seeks to translate this knowledge into new approaches and technologies for early diagnosis.

The Institute is a key part of the CRUK Cambridge Centre, providing an opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with Cambridge colleagues in the biological, clinical, physical, chemical and engineering sciences.

Survival statistics for oesophageal adenocarcinoma are dismal and it is the fastest-rising cancer in the developed world.

The majority of patients present with advanced disease and most patients who are treated with partial removal of the oesophagus or with cancer therapies do not benefit.

The Fitzgerald group is focused on understanding how cancer of the oesophagus develops in order to develop better clinical tests for early detection, including investigation of the pre-malignant condition Barrett's Oesophagus.

This collaborative project, with Prof David Wedge's group at the University of Manchester and Prof Paul Spellman's group at The Oregon Health and Science University, is funded by the International Alliance for Cancer Early Detection (ACED).

The aim of the project is to characterize evolutionary subtypes or 'evotypes' of Oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC), using sequencing data from samples of OAC, Barrett's Oesophagus (BE)
- the precursor to OAC
- along with control tissues from the same patient. This will inform better stratification and treatments for patients in future. You will work closely with other members of the Fitzgerald team who are experts in oesophageal cancer and with our collaborators in Manchester and Oregon providing exciting opportunities to learn from experts in the field of genomics and cancer evolution.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
