We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to work as part of a research team consisting of the University of Reading and Metalchemy Ltd on an ambitious industrially relevant project aiming to develop novel biodegradable food packaging materials.

This will be achieved by developing and scaling up a novel bionanocomposite which can be used as food packaging material providing extended shelf-life for various food products; it will consist of blends of biodegradable polymers and silver nanoparticles and offer antimicrobial activities and enhanced physical properties matching those of synthetic plastics.


This project is a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic scientist to work in an innovative and multidisciplinary environment and advance the current state-of-the-art in food packaging.

The project is funded through the Innovate UK "Better Food for All:
Innovation for improved nutrition" competition.


This is a fixed part-time post for 20 months (at 80% full time equivalent), based at the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, starting ideally on the 1st of September 2023.


You will have:

  • A PhD in a relevant area (food packaging, polymer science, food technology, chemical engineering)
  • Hands on skills in polymer science/packaging/material characterisation
  • Understanding of process scaling up
  • Knowledge and experience in food preservation and food analysis
  • Strong communication and writing skills
