Main responsibilities to include:

To successfully complete the Assistant Practitioner Higher Apprenticeship Participate in the Breast Imaging Services staff rotation both on the mobile units, static satellite unit and at the breast institute Provide mammogram examinations for both breast screening and symptomatic women Make decisions about variable physical characteristics of a clients anatomical breast shape in order to achieve the best possible mammogram Positively promote breast awareness and participate in all aspects of Health Promotion where appropriate.

To perform the full range of additional specialised imaging techniques during assessment and symptomatic clinics at the Breast Institute. This includes clients with learning or physical disabilities. Rapidly assess the emotional needs of the client through non-verbal means of communication
- facial expression, body language, tone of voice and other subtle reactions to the screening environment.

To demonstrate advance communication skills when working in the assessment clinic, as women are often extremely anxious.

Be able to communicate complex information and possibly negotiate in a calm and professional manner with clients who may be angry or distressed.

To take active responsibility for the induction and mentoring of Assistant Practitioners in mammography.

Communicate effectively with other Assistant Practitioners/Mammography Associates when supervising screening clinics at the breast unit to ensure smooth and efficient running of the clinic.


Undertake all clinical duties required to a high professional and technical standard of work in conjunction with qualified Radiographers, who will provide advice and supervision where required Assist Radiographers with localisations and stereo procedures Work independently in the x-ray room, to problem solve minor equipment faults and address the womens concerns with regards to cancer or radiation dangers.

Be aware of own technical recall rate (percentage of films technically inadequate and need repeating) and evaluate against the NHSBSP guidelines which recommend less than 2%.

Any variation should be addressed as professional development. Assist with Radiography Assistant duties as required.


Undertake quality control tests on digital mammography equipment and record result accurately Use professional judgement to interpret QA test results and evaluate when to seek advice.
